Mobility Analytics Group Lead

Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Advanced Transportation Department in the Energy and Environment Science and Technology (EES&T) directorate is looking for a Mobility Analytics Group Lead. Our team works onsite in Idaho Falls, Idaho with a 9X80 schedule with every other Friday off. You will report to the Advanced Transportation Department Manager. INL’s Advanced Transportation Department researches and develops new technology to ensure that America’s increasingly connected transportation and energy infrastructure is reliable, secure, and affordable. The Mobility Analytics Group Lead oversees the group’s work identifying and vetting technological needs and solutions for vehicle/grid integration, connected mobility, and advanced fueling infrastructure. The group performs technoeconomic analysis, analyzes technology adoption and use, and develops novel, data-driven models. As Group Lead, you will also oversee development and maintenance of specialized data-analytics software tools used by organizations across the nation and the world. To be successful in this position, you need a highly collaborative mindset, and a strong focus on achieving goals in a dynamic environment. You will spend approximately 20% of your time managing your group and 80% of your time leading technical research activities, so you need to be a versatile, engaged leader and researcher who is passionate about creating new knowledge and tools that will directly improve our nation’s future transportation and energy infrastructure. *Responsibilities:* * Analyze data and produce results in response to data analytics, visualization, and modeling needs on a variety of computational architectures (cloud, on-premises, edge-based). * Work with domain experts to understand the scope and limits of questions that can be answered by data sets, identify key data features as inputs to analysis, and design output metrics that elegantly describe system attributes and behavior. * Demonstrate effective research skills and the ability to collaborate and partner with other government agencies, academia, and private sector companies to achieve project objectives. * Publish results of research and development in a mix of referreed publications and conference proceedings. * Perform management responsibilities, including helping group members set and achieve goals; provide regular performance feedback and conduct formal performance reviews; regularly communicate with line management and networking with peers * Collaborate with other organizations in the laboratory to advance department and laboratory goals. * Assist the Department Manager in talent development, including recruiting new team members, helping staff set and achieve professional development goals, and rewarding high-performing employees. * Ensure the work within the group is performed safely, securely, efficiently, and within scope, schedule, and budget constraints. * Assist the Department Manager to implement and evolve the department’s R&D strategy. * Lead the group to create and strengthen relationships with funding sponsors and research partners at other national laboratories, universities, and private-sector organizations. * Lead and contribute to proposal writing to acquire funding from diverse funding sponsors. *Minimum Requirements: * * Advanced degree in related field with 6 years of relevant experience or PhD and 4 years. * A sustained publication record in transportation or fueling/charging infrastructure research is required. * Demonstrated leadership capability that promotes an inclusive and diverse work environment that promotes a high-trust culture across the team. *Desired Experience*: * PhD in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical and Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or related field. * Proficiency collecting, managing, and analyzing large data sets; creating data-driven models; using simulation tools; and performing trade-off studies and technoeconomic analysis to answer research questions related to transportation/energy infrastructure. * Experience working collaboratively with enterprise Information Technology teams to secure computing resources, update tools and policies, and ensure staff productivity using enterprise-level software-development and analytical tools. *Job Information: * * The pay range for this position is: ($111,888 - $229,284).
