Mohs Technician III

Overview
Independently performs a variety of tasks associated with the logging, tracking, staining, and processing of tissue sections in the Mohs Micrographic Surgery Laboratory. Is the local Subject Matter Expert on laboratory issues and provides support to team members.
Responsibilities
* Demonstrates high-level knowledge and ability to perform Tissue Sectioning, processing, and embedding.
* Demonstrates proficiency in Mapping Techniques that are used in the Mohs Laboratory and teaches these techniques to junior staff and learners.
* Demonstrates an understanding of the use and proper maintenance of laboratory equipment, including the stainer and cryostat.
* Shows proficiency in regulations and compliance required for ongoing certification of the laboratory, and maintains and writes or edits procedure manual to align with new standards.
* Shows a high-level understanding of staining theories, and teaches these theories to junior staff and learners. Maintains and develops immunostaining protocols for high complexity testing.
* Must demonstrate proficiency in Embedding Microtomy Techniques. Expert ability to maintain laboratory safety, including the proper use of PPE, chemical safety, and equipment safety.
* Is able to troubleshoot problems, make recommendations, and implement process improvement changes.
* Performs and evaluates quality control and instrument function checks using established practices.
* Orients and trains new laboratory staff on basic theory, protocols, use of equipment, and safety practices, among other topics.
* Actively participates in ongoing training and leads improvement efforts and lab efficiency projects, including academic papers and publications.
* Responsible for the initial validation process for immunohistochemical stains and ongoing testing of antibodies. Runs slide validation studies on all new antibodies and makes up fresh antibody when needed.
* Performs inking and grossing of specimens independently, able to instruct others on how to gross and ink specimens.
* Maintains surgical case logs.
* Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of three (3) years of relevant laboratory experience OR Associates Degree and minimum of five (5) years of relevant laboratory experience OR nine (9) years of relevant laboratory experience with exemplary performance;
* Basic Knowledge of computer software systems;
* ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) OR ASMH (American Society for Mohs Histotechnology) Certification OR completion of Mohs Technician Advanced Training Course OR other as approved by Lab Director required
