Position Summary
Process and test animal specimens for diagnostic purposes using molecular-bases assays; organize and analyze data, and enter and retrieve information from the Laboratory Information Management System; perform quality control procedures and maintain quality control records; store and dispose of specimens; operate and maintain scientific equipment; communicate with lab staff, veterinarians and clients to provide information and lab results; work with other lab personnel in an environment of problem-solving and process improvement. This position has responsibility for the safety and health of others and therefore involves strict attention to detail and protocol. Working hours are between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and may include occasional University holidays on a rotating basis.
Position duties include:
55% Performs laboratory assays and procedures, including confirmatory and quality control testing, to produce results for health maintenance, diagnosis, and treatment of animals. Identifies and solves technical problems related to this testing
10% Organizes workload for the group based on caseload and staffing; training of new personnel; operates, maintains, calibrates, and repairs complex instruments and equipment used by multiple groups in order to provide accurate and efficient performance of assays
10% Facilitates solutions to complex client concerns, including communication with other laboratory sections. Communicate with clients, and other laboratory personnel/sections, regarding sharing of specimens, workload volume, and clarifying orders
10% Participates in laboratory problem-solving, policy making, and Standard Operating Procedure writing and revision.
5% Assists with special projects, including method comparisons and new test development. Inventories and orders supplies to maintain a ready supply of laboratory consumables.
5% Maintains quality control records, identifies quality control variances, and resolves quality control issues.
5% Other duties include performing Foreign Animal Disease Testing which may include Biosafety Level 3 procedures.

Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in a biological science field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in the technical aspects of the work to be performed, experience implementing procedures and programs; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards
Desired Qualifications
Two to five years of work experience in a related science field and high-volume diagnostic laboratory techniques. Molecular diagnostic testing experience in nucleic acid extraction, PCR-based procedures including Real-Time PCR and Standard PCR; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and demonstrate a high level of initiative; have excellent time-management skills; experience in the use of laboratory information systems and the file management and manipulation of Excel and Word; excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong problem solving and customer service skills, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
