Monitor Technician - Cardiac Surveillance Unit

Summary: The Monitor Technician is responsible for the on-going surveillance of patients’ cardiac monitors and providing RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern and prior variances. Works cooperatively as part of a team and under the supervision of an RN/LPN. Responsibilities: 1. Continually monitors patients on telemetry by interpreting and recording all EKG rhythms. a. Provides direct patient care by performing patient preparation for monitoring. b. As appropriate, monitors O2 sats and blood pressure. c. Understands parameters indicating when to alert the supervising nurse. d. Provides and accurately processes telemetry monitor records and other documents. e. Ensures all patient care equipment is in safe working order prior to use. Reports any issues to management and removes malfunctioning equipment from service. 2. Accurately documents cardiac rhythm data according to unit specific standards. a. Immediately reports any changes to rhythm or patient’s conditions to the primary nurse or charge nurse. b. Communicates pertinent patient information during handoff report to other teammates. 3. Ensures teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem-solving interactions. a. Accepts delegated tasks and assignments that are within their scope of practice. b. Seeks help when needed and provides help to others when available. 4. Ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for self, patients, and teammates. a. Utilizes proper body mechanics. b. Follows proper infection control techniques which include items such as handwashing, isolation techniques, and standard precautions. 5. Responds appropriately and promptly in emergency situations. a. Recognizes signs and symptoms of distress and immediately notifies appropriate teammates. b. Obtains needed supplies/equipment in a timely manner. c. Follows defined procedure in emergency situation and escalates concerns through chain of command. WAYNE Other information: Education • Successful completion of Basic EKG training with a minimum passing score of 85%. • High School graduate or equivalent. Licensure/Certification • EKG Monitoring Certification preferred. • Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support. Experience • Prior experience in a health care setting preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Ability to interpret and understand EKGs and arrhythmias. • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of monitoring equipment. • Ability to maintain competency in rhythm interpretation, end tidal CO2 monitoring (capnography), non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) and pulse oximetry. • Ability to provide excellent patient and customer care to all patients and their visitors as well as internal and external teammates. • Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
