The Forest Monitoring Program will be staffed with four full-time employees with a range of field-based monitoring experience, silviculture knowledge, and experience in forest health projects. The seasonal will primarily work as a member of a three-person field crew. The monitoring program will have 2 crews during the summer and 1 crew during the fall. The Forest Monitoring Measurement Specialist will lead one summer crew and a yet to be hired Crew Lead will be the in-field supervisor for the other summer crew and the fall crew. The seasonal will act as a field technician along with 2 interns and 1 AmeriCorps member. Crew composition will vary in the summer and be consistent in the fall. Search Contact EmailEthan Bucholz, Ethan.Bucholz@colostate.edu Position Summary + Data collection for monitoring Forest Restoration Wildfire Risk Mitigation ( FRWRM ) grant projects including overstory, understory, fuels, canopy cover and growth habits. + Navigating to field plots and taking accurate data under the supervision of a crew leader. + Communicating with members of the public when in the field. + This position requires hiking and carrying field equipment most hours of the workday. + Occasional camping will be required. + The employee should be able to work in adverse weather conditions, steep/rough terrain, and with minimal supervision. + Extensive travel throughout the state to different monitoring projects associated with the FRWRM grant program. Lodging is provided during travel, but the seasonal will need to secure their own housing within commuting distance of Fort Collins. + The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States before the employment start date; Colorado State Forest Service will not sponsor a visa for this position. Essential Job Duties Job Duty CategoryData Collection and Entry Duty/Responsibility + Field data collection (tree height, tree diameter, fuel loading, canopy cover, fuel-model determination, growth habit, ground cover classification, ocular estimates of plant cover, litter, and duff measurements) + Projects needing data collection will mainly be associated with FRWRM (Forest Restoration and Wildfire Risk Mitigation) awarded grants. + + Data collection may also occur in association with Health Forests-Vibrant Communities ( HFVC ) projects. + + Monitoring data will be collected on pre- and post-treatment stand conditions, exhibiting variable current conditions and cover-types. + + Field safety – the seasonal will primarily be working outside, in variable stand conditions, with Colorado weather patterns and wildlife. + · Interaction with landowners and other CSFS employees o The seasonal will travel all over the state and may be required to meet with various collaborative groups, private landowners, and other CSFS employees to guide them through the monitoring process. o The seasonal may be asked to help their supervisor train foresters and other staff on monitoring protocols while in the field, and may need to contact landowners to gain access to certain properties. · Travel o This position will require extended travel, usually 4 days/week, but will be regularly housed within hotels/campsites paid for by the Forest Monitoring Program during their travel. The seasonal will typically be away from Fort Collins Monday morning through Thursday evening. o For projects located more than five hours away, we may augment to an 8-6 schedule where the seasonal may serve 8 days on and then get 6 days off. o We will car camp for certain projects, especially if there are no reasonably priced hotels close to our project sites. The ratio of camping to hotels will be dependent on projects selected for monitoring. We will not be backpacking or camping in extreme cold/snow. o Occasional weekend or evening service may occur, depending on travel logistics. The seasonal will receive advance notice of abnormal work schedules. · Data entry and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) o Help convert field-collected data into Forest Vegetation Simulator ( FVS )-ready formats and rearrange data for other analyses. o The seasonal will use FVS to model pre- and post-treatment conditions, as well as modeling proposed management actions. · Other certifications, experience, and trainings may include but are not limited to Forest Vegetation Simulator ( FVS ) training, Forest Inventory and Analysis ( FIA ) fieldwork training, Colorado Forest Restoration Institute ( CFRI ) fieldwork training, in-house resume writing, and ESRI /in-house ArcGIS training. · Work with supervisors to prepare a work plan, set goals, and evaluate progress.
