Motor Vehicle Operator
Summary The Motor Vehicle Operator is a position located at the Alvin C. York Campus in the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) in Murfreesboro, TN. The incumbent reports directly to the Supervisor General Engineer for the TVHS activation team and performs duties directly contributing to the overall coordination and activation of various community-based outreach clinics (CBOCs) and large-scale renovation projects. Responsibilities Duties include but are not limited to: Maintain a commercial type driver's license that allows transporting passengers on buses and driving vehicles weighing over 26,000 lbs. gross. Conduct operator checks and maintenance of all types of vehicles (i.e. safety equipment, fluid levels, tire pressures, belts and hoses, etc.) Maintain vehicle records and maintenance of vehicles. Determine the best and safest routes to follow and be alert to road conditions, hazards, making adjustments to abide by all laws, weight, heights, and clearances. Operate various motor vehicles including sedans, trucks, buses and lay down type patient vehicles. Responsible for assisting in receiving & storing, issuing of supplies, furniture, and materials. Operate tractors with accessory equipment and is knowledgeable of power take-off style equipment and its safe uses. Make scheduled trips on a regular and recurring basis carrying patients, materials, and equipment. Working knowledge of lay down patient vehicle and the operation of all related equipment. Remove snow and ice from VA grounds using all types of equipment as needed. Operates dump trucks with hydraulic equipment such as platform lifts. Must be capable of driving in heavy traffic using driving skills to maintain safe yet timely transportation of patients, materials and equipment. Makes independent decisions as to safe operating condition and needs for emergent repairs. Capable of moderate physical effort is required in the handling of objects. Physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, in operating the vehicle. Able to work outside and at time exposed to bad weather in loading and unloading vehicles. Incumbent must operate the vehicle in a manner that will create a favorable impression on the Department of Veterans Affairs. Incumbent must have the basic skill necessary to use all hand and power operated equipment. When driving, incumbent is responsible for the safety of when transporting materials. * The Motor Vehicle Operator incumbent must possess and maintain a current, valid state driver's license. Physical Requirements: Incumbent shall be in good physical condition. The job requires stooping, bending, climbing in and out of vehicles, pushing heavy carts, lifting boxes and furniture that may weigh 80-100 pounds, climbing stairs and good coordination is required to operate motor vehicles safely in all weather conditions. Working Conditions: Incumbent works inside and outside in all types of weather and is subject to constantly changing environments. Incumbent is subject to health hazards due to handling possibly contaminated items. Incumbent must able to drive in snow, rain, and other bad road conditions. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces - Incumbent is exposed to various hazardous materials in the course of assisting in work assignments. He/she is provided protective clothing, equipment, and safety devices for their personal protection. Education There is no substitution of education for this position.
