Multiphysics Modeling and Simulation of Electromagnetic Systems Postdoctoral Researcher
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a highly qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Materials Performance and Modeling Group within the Materials Science and Manufacturing Department reporting to the project investigator. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. You will conduct advanced modeling and simulation of fusion energy systems and microwave processing through additive manufacturing. You will develop open-source software for multiphysics simulations involving radiofrequency (RF) and microwave-driven systems and performing verification and validation (V&V) activities through methods such as the method of manufactured solutions, code-to-code benchmarking, and comparisons to experimental results. This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge research in fusion energy systems and contribute to innovative advancements in the field. *Responsibilities Include:* * You will further develop the electromagnetic physics module within INL’s open-source Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework to study power deposition profiles in low-pressure microwave-driven plasmas and create fully integrated multiphysics simulations for superconducting magnet design. * Enhance the multiphysics capabilities of MOOSE to enable whole-device modeling of fusion systems is another crucial aspect of this role, which will involve working with other modeling and simulation teams across INL. This effort involves engaging in computational modeling that couples multiphysics phenomena and various plasma applications. * You will be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team, working effectively both independently and collaboratively. * Write scientific manuscripts for journal publication and presenting research findings at national and international conferences and meetings. *Minimum Requirements: * * PhD in Physics, Electrical, Nuclear, Materials, or Mechanical Engineering, or related field. * PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years. * Expertise in finite element modeling of electromagnetic systems. * Familiarity with verification/validation/uncertainty quantification techniques (e.g., method of manufactured solutions) and error analysis. * Programming proficiency in C and Python. * Comprehension and ability to efficiently model complex physicochemical phenomena. * Demonstrated oral and working publication list in English. *Desired Requirements:* * Experience with the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). * Experience with high-performance computing systems, LINUX, Slurm, and others. * Experience modeling RF or microwave-driven plasma discharges using fluid/continuum descriptions. * Experience with machine learning/artificial intelligence methods. *Job Information: * * The target salary for this position is $96,900. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. * You are required to show a demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment. * TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment. *Benefits and Relocation* * Medical, Dental, Vision, and Flexible Spending Accounts * Access and ability to self contribute to 401(k) * Paid time off (personal leave) * Employee Education Program (tuition assistance) * Comprehensive Relocation Package * Benefit eligibility subject multiple factors, including employment status and position classification. /INL is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy’s mission in nuclear energy research, science, and national defense. With more than 5,800 scientists, researchers, and support staff, the laboratory works with national and international governments, universities and industry partners to discover new science and development technologies that underpin the nation’s nuclear and renewable energy, national security, and environmental missions./ *Selective Service Requirements*To be eligible for employment at INL males born after December 31, 1959 must have registered with the Selective Service System (SSS).
