Job purpose

The essential function of the position within the organization is to manage the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s natural gas utility. Work involves the use of judgment in the interpretation, application, and enforcement of laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the City’s natural gas utility services.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. (One year of work experience may substitute for one year of education, up to a maximum two years substitution.) Minimum of 5+ years of experience in skilled maintenance repair, installation, or construction work related to gas lines and service. Must have a valid state driver’s license and meet minimum driving standards.

Knowledge of:

Comprehensive knowledge of the procedures, equipment, and tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of natural gas lines.Thorough knowledge of national and state building and construction code standards as they apply to gas utility systems.Problem Solving – identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner, gathering and analyzing information skillfully, developing alternative solutionsTaking responsibility for own actions, keeping commitmentsCommitting to long hours of work when necessary to reach goalsConsistency in attendance and punctuality

Working conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, bright and/or dim light, dust or pollen, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors. All required safety standards shall be adhered to in order to mitigate risk from moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, heights, blood-borne pathogens, traffic, animals and wildlife, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other identified hazards.

 

Physical requirements

This position requires frequent standing, kneeling, bending and climbing. The employee must be able to use hands to operate and manipulate tools and equipment. This position requires very heavy physical exertion including the ability to lift over 50 pounds and exert over 100 pounds of force on a regular basis.

The employee must be willing to work non-standard and overtime hours as required.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and depth perception.
