Summary This position is located in Southeast Archeological Center, in the Archeological Collections and Information Management Division. Responsibilities The Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC) is responsible for archeological research and cultural resource management activities relating to 70 National Park Service areas in nine southeastern states, Puerto Rico, and the U. S. Virgin Islands. This position is in the Archeological Collections and Information Management Section of the Museum and Archival Services Branch. The incumbent's responsibilities relate to one of the National Park Service's most extensive archeological collections. The collections consist of more than 3,000 individual accessions, which encompass millions of artifacts and several hundred thousand supporting documents. This position functions as the database manager and oversees museum cataloging for archeological collections at SEAC. Job duties include serving as the Database Manager for SEAC's catalog records in the MCMS database and serving as the Supervisor for the Center's backlog archeological cataloging efforts. The incumbent identifies, catalogs, and manages detailed data for archeological objects. The incumbent supports the Supervisory Museum Curator in meeting backlog cataloging goals, managing archeological/museum data and databases, providing technical assistance/guidance, and facilitating research and education. The position also assists with curation and managing museum collections. Position Location: Tallahassee, Florida. Please visit http://www.nps.gov/seac/index.htm for more information. Winters are usually mild, and summers are hot and humid. Schools, medical facilities, shopping and entertainment facilities are available locally. Government quarters are NOT available. One vocational technical school, one college, and two state universities (Florida State University and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University) are located in Tallahassee. Physical Demands: Incumbent will be required to sit or stand for extended periods. The work is usually sedentary, but depending on priorities may involve lifting and moving moderately heavy containers (e.g., boxes up to 50 pounds), climbing ladders, as well as maintenance chores. Handling collections must be performed in an acceptable manner as per curatorial standards. Intense concentration is essential to proper cataloging, data management, and handling collections. Some use of hand tools and small power tools is required. Occasional travel may require extra duty hours. Working Conditions: Nearly all work will be performed in an office, laboratory, or a controlled environmental collection storage facility. Working with collections may involve some exposure to dust and other air-borne solid particulate materials, and exposure to chemicals used to preserve and curate artifacts. The incumbent makes occasional trips to other NPS units. This may include occasional exposure to dust, mold, and buildings with poorly controlled environments. Some travel to other facilities and museums, as well as to training and professional meetings is required. Travel for occasional field projects or incident response may include exposure to a variety of outdoor environments and hazards. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Time-in-grade does not apply to new excepted service appointments and must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must have the ability to lift 50 pounds. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/17/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology. This also includes activities such as: 1) Museum or archeological collections management, 2) complete and maintain museum documentation, 3) generate catalog records and complete data entry into a collections database, 4) sort, analyze/identify, and process collections, and 5) conduct collections research. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree in related fields of study course work is required. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled including archeology, anthropology. You must submit transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. To compute this percentage, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide the number of completed higher-level graduate education semester hours of education, add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
