JOB DESCRIPTION
This is professional services work in overseeing all activities of the Archives Division of the Maine State Museum. These archival collections, which have grown to become a major element of the museum’s collections-related work, include documents, ephemera, bound volumes of a printed or hand-written nature, research and library publications, maps, letters, diaries, periodicals, institutional and business records, advertising and marketing materials, recordings and digital records, etc.; the collections date from the 17th century to the present. The curator oversees the care and development of the collections, the public research use of the collections, the documentation of the collections, and the use of the collections in museum exhibits and research. The curator must uphold museum ethics and professional standards, take part in collections-related staff meetings, represent the museums at conferences and other venues, and make public presentations.
TYPICAL DUTIES
+ Supervises two other positions related to archival collections and periodically reviews and manages those duties as required.
+ Organizes and supervises collections management and development within the Archives Division, including cataloguing of collections using appropriate databases, structuring relations with the public, and in concert with other museum staff, organizes the movement of materials and the creation and maintenance of suitable storage conditions.
+ Plans and organizes the preparation and organization of storage areas for archival collections, in keeping with professional requirements.
+ Develops and exercises the protocols and other necessities required to effect public research access to the archival collections and supervises this public research access.
+ Completes the planning and content of museum exhibits as they relate to archival collections and ensures the professional use and interpretation of these collections in those exhibits. Helps install museum exhibits as appropriate and required.
+ Assists with the activities and special events (public presentations, tours, welcoming programs) connected with the museum’s public program offerings.
REQUIREMENTS:
+ Good knowledge of American history and especially of Maine history
+ Familiarity with the kinds of archival collections and materials that support an understanding of Maine history and are likely to be sought for or appear within museum collections
+ Understanding of the physical materials of different kinds of historical archives and the storage and use conditions appropriate to each
+ Understanding of current systems of collections documentation and retrieval and familiarity with the databases that record collection information
+ Familiarity with the fundamentals of museum exhibit design and presentation
+ Familiar with historical research and the requirements for managing public access to collections
+ Ability to write good informational texts and reports
+ Ability to work constructively with other museum professionals
+ Ability to work with community groups and potential donors
+ Understanding of the essential requirements of the profession and the ethics that govern it.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Four (4) years experience in museum work in a field of specialization and a Bachelors Degree in that specialization or related field. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
