The Music Specialist Counselor position plays a key role in providing an enriching and exciting experience for campers through structured music sessions focused on rock band instruments, DJ skills, recording and performance. You will lead and support all aspects of the music program, including instrument instruction, vocal coaching, writing, recording and guided practice sessions, while fostering creativity and a love for music. The goal is to ensure campers have a fun and educational environment where they can grow their musical talents and collaborate with peers. The Music Specialist Counselor is responsible for creating an engaging and safe environment for all participants, ensuring campers’ growth in musicianship, and assisting with preparations for performances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead and instruct campers in guitar, bass, drums, keyboard/piano and vocal techniques.
DJ and digital recording skills.
Facilitate guided practice sessions and open jam sessions, helping campers refine their skills.
Running live music shows and performances including set up of all audio, visual and lighting equipment.
Responsible for performance stage and/or theater operations and equipment.
Encourage and support campers in forming bands and collaborating on music projects.
Provide individual and group feedback on performance and musicianship.
Maintain, organize and inventory all music equipment, ensuring proper use, care and safety standards.
Assist with preparing campers for their performances at the camp talent show.
Assist with general camp recreation activities, games and events.
Other duties as assigned.

This position is classified under California's Camp Counselor exemption (LAB 1182.4 and Wage Order 5). Employees are paid a weekly salary of 85% of their hourly rate for hours worked between 40- 54 hours per week or will be paid at 85% of their hourly rate for each hour worked if the employee works less than 40 hours per week. Any hours worked over 564 will be paid at overtime rates, in accordance with California labor law.
PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:
Ability to work independently and within teams in a fast-paced camp environment, with moderate supervision.
Demonstrates strong initiative, responsibility, and attention to safety, particularly with musical equipment.
Ability to inspire campers' creativity and create a supportive, fun environment for musicians of all skill levels.
Comfortable building relationships with kids and teens (ages 7-17) through music.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL SKILLS:
2+ years' experience teaching or playing guitar, bass, drums, vocals, or DJ preferably in a camp or educational environment.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with campers at varying skill levels.
Ability to work collaboratively with other camp staff to deliver a seamless music program.
Experience organizing or participating in band rehearsals, music performances, or jam sessions is a plus.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
+/- 15 Campers (7-17 years old)
BASIC SCHEDULE/REQUIREMENTS:
Pre-hire criminal history clearances, child abuse clearances from the Department of Public Welfare, and federal history through FBI fingerprint screening.
Must be physically capable of bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, standing, and lifting 50 lbs.
Comfortable working in an outdoor all-season environment, with a preferred 3-week commitment during the summer camp season.
