The Music Therapist is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive program of therapeutic music activities for residents. The Music Therapist must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, plan, and provide services to residents. Position is responsible for planning and facilitating a comprehensive program of therapeutic music activities for residents to develop and maintain cognitive functioning, enhance creativity, promote self-confidence, encourage socialization, and foster community involvement. Engages residents in all levels of living and works as a member of the Life Enrichment team. Job Duties Engages residents in music experiences to identify their responses to different styles and types of musical experiences, such as improvising or listening. Music Therapist must show an understanding of different musical styles, and elements of music such as tempo, harmony and dynamics and their effect on the therapeutic use of music. Designs and implements therapeutic music sessions and interventions designed to meet residents’ desires/needs, such as singing, instrument play, song writing, and improvisation. Provides individual and group music therapy sessions utilizing recreative, receptive and improvisational music interventions as well as music therapy techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, rhythmic auditory cuing and other appropriate interventions to meet resident goals. Shows competency in a variety of instruments such as piano., guitar and percussion instruments. Has pleasant and appropriate vocal technique. Provides music therapy interventions to address resident needs. Goals include self-expression, lessening social isolation, maintaining cognitive functioning, communicating, and more. Establishes goals and objectives for music therapy treatment, considering one’s needs, capabilities, interests, and overall therapeutic value. Selects or adapts musical instruments, musical equipment, or non-musical materials, such as adaptive devices or visual aids. Supports special music-related events (visiting artists, concerts, workshops etc.) as needed. Conducts Bell Choir or similar instrument-related group program at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads. Maintains music supplies, instruments and creative arts therapy budget. Maintains licensure requirements, continuing education requirements and stays up to date with current music therapy research. Job Qualifications The music therapist will be board certified through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) and will have the credentials MT-BC (Music Therapist – Board Certified). The Music Therapist must display a genuine interest in serving residents with dementia and be empathetic, patient, creative and open to new ideas. Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy. Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methodology of creative arts therapy appropriate for the geriatric population. Currently certified through CBMT with a Music Therapy Board Certification (MT-BC). A minimum of one year providing music therapy and/or activities to seniors in a multidisciplinary setting.
