NANA SHAREHOLDER COLLEGE INTERNSHIP - NANA Regional Lands Subsistence Projects Intern Paid Internship

Job Description

The Lands Department is responsible for advocating for subsistence. The Lands Subsistence Projects Intern will have the opportunity to learn the way NANA manages the 2.2 million acres of land on behalf of shareholders. This includes the opportunity to participate in the following projects and learn the following skills:

Subsistence Mapping: Updating NANA’s historic subsistence and place names maps to support land management decisions. Opportunity to learn how Geospatial Information Systems are used for this project and the history of this project.

Resource Protection Officer Program (RPO): The RPO program includes patrolling NANA lands to prevent trespass by non-shareholders during the peak hunting season. Opportunity to learn what being an RPO means, the kind of logistics it takes to organize the training, and how conflicts on NANA lands are handled.

Prepare a Presentation on ANCs responsibilities in managing lands: Opportunity to learn how NANA, and other Alaska Native Corporations, approach governing lands in alignment with the Inupiat Ilitquisiat.

Internships will run from June 2 nd – August 3 rd .

Responsibilities

Complete a presentation of the responsibilities of Alaska Native Corporations, including NANA specific information, in managing lands obtained through the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

Provide support to the Lands Specialist to complete scanning key lands documents to support the Subsistence Mapping Project.

Provide support to the Director of Lands to prepare the kickoff the beginning of the Resource Protection Officer Season.

Attend Weekly Lands staff meetings

May answer incoming calls, may also make outgoing calls as needed to support activities, projects, or day-to day work activity.

Operate in a climate of confidentiality requiring discretion.

Other duties may be assigned, as needed.

Qualifications

Must be a NANA shareholder. NANA shareholders own stock in NANA Regional Corporation, Inc.

Must be 18 years or older.

Must be currently enrolled in college or a vocational school full-time and have completed one semester of postsecondary education.

Have good communication skills to work with local leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

Work experience with grant programs.

Driver’s License preferred.

Preferably a Junior or Senior level college student.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors - environmentally controlled; requires most or all work to be done inside.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office atmosphere.

Description of environment: Office building with standard office environment.

Physical requirements: Employee is required to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

The position requires reading, detailed work, problem solving, interactions with other companies including other NANA companies, reasoning, math, language, presentations, verbal and written communication, analytical reasoning, will require the employee in the position to manage multiple concurrent tasks, and handle constant interruptions.
