Nanoscience & Technology Division Director
Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center where leading scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity – from how to obtain reliable and affordable energy, to how to protect ourselves from emerging threats. Ever since we were born out of the University of Chicago’s work on the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, our goal has been to make an impact — from the atomic to the human to the global scale. The laboratory works in concert with universities, industry, and other national laboratories on questions and experiments too large for any one institution to do by itself. Through collaborations here and around the world, we strive to discover new ways to develop energy innovations through science, create novel materials molecule-by-molecule, and gain a deeper understanding of our planet and the cosmos. The Nanoscience and Technology (NST) division is one of the five research divisions within the Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate at Argonne National Laboratory. The division performs world-class nanoscience and hosts the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science user facility. The NST division maintains state-of-the-art facilities and is deeply engaged with other national user facilities, including Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source and Leadership Computing Facility. Division research is fundamental science that supports national scientific priorities. The NST Director will inspire, manage, and motivate a world-class team of approximately 100 scientists, engineers, and support staff. The Director is responsible for delivering on the scientific vision for the division, which includes execution of the short- and long-term strategic directions of the division and actively identifying and pursuing new R&D opportunities and foster collaborations across divisions. The NST Director will also be responsible for developing world class scientific user capabilities in nanoscience, including planning, securing resources, and executing acquisitions/building of instruments, infrastructure, and appropriate scientific and technical expertise. The Director has line management responsibility for both R&D and operations within the division. They are an integral member of the Laboratory Management team and will work closely with Department of Energy (DOE) program sponsors and other sponsoring entities to review and promote the divisional research and development activities. The Director also ensures divisional activities follow all Federal, State and Laboratory policies and regulations and that work is carried out safely, securely, and efficiently.
