Summary This position is located in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Responsibilities This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of ten years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action. Major Duties of this position include: Operates and maintains a variety of sampling, monitoring, and recording equipment. Conducts surveys of historic abandoned mine features such as adits, shafts, slides, or spoil material. Reviews or contributes to various park planning, management and interpretive efforts and documents as they pertain to land reclamation. Develops and coordinates work groups to oversee mitigation and restoration of natural resource sites. Uses Global Position System (GPS) to record natural resource sites and projects. Natural Resources Management and Biological Sciences GS-0401: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Physical Science GS-1301: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience may include but is not limited to the following examples: lead work crews in a backcountry setting, assess park wilderness infrastructure for needed repairs or mitigation, work with engineers or other resource professionals to develop condition assessments, develop plans to improve natural resource conditions, prepare technical reports or summaries of field work, work in an interdisciplinary team of resource managers, utilize Global Positioning Systems to identify or record natural resource work sites, and conduct background reviews of park natural resources. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree; The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. OR Successful completion of a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience that together meets the requirements of the position (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. You must include transcripts. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily indoors. Occasionally, work may be performed outdoors in all types of weather. Outdoor assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests.
