Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for an experienced Naval Systems Specialist or a Senior Technologist to join our Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE) team located at His Majesty Canadian Dockyard in Halifax, NS. This permanent position consists in providing engineering, technical and logistical support services to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and allied nations on an array of combat systems and related support equipment. This is a full-time and permanent position with a requirement to regularly work both in-office and onboard RCN ships.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead Shipboard Surveys. Support independent verification & validation (IV&V) of the material state of various in-service naval combat systems and new Engineering Changes (ECs) by coordinating and conducting shipboard surveys to capture deviations, defects, maintenance, regulatory, certification and configuration issues based on technical system drawings and equipment specifications.

Produce Technical Assessments & Reports. Review & analyze results of onboard surveys to report individual defects within the DND System of Record with supporting specifications and evidence (including pictures gathered through surveys) to define the defect & recommend corrective actions. Consolidate results of system assessments into comprehensive reports to communicate key issues to colleagues, coastal stakeholders and/or system authorities.

Support Technical Solutions & Changes. Collaborate with team members and costal system subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify systemic issues across the RCN fleet focusing on individual combat systems and equipment. Use historical assessments and maintenance information to produce presentations and lead briefings to naval system authorities to provide evidence of systemic issues and support recommended solutions.

Project Management & Leadership. Support task & team leads with scheduling of key activities and events based on platform availability windows, tracking priorities monthly status reports, completing annual year-end reports and other task management activities (with opportunity for growth to independently lead own tasks).

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

Mandatory: obtention a Government of Canada security clearance, which requires Canadian citizenship and continuous residence in Canada over the last 10 years as a minimum.

Mandatory: Engineering technologist diploma or BSc in Engineering or candidates with equivalent military experience supporting the Royal Canadian Navy in combat system engineering.

Desirable: 10 years of significant and recent experience in a related field.

Mandatory: Proficient in reading, writing and speaking English with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels (in-person and electronically) with peers, supervisors and clients (bilingual in English and French is considered an asset). Includes ability to write reports, technical correspondence, and procedure manuals. 

Mandatory: Work is conducted both in an office and onboard RCN ships, normally when alongside in close proximity to the office.  The employee must be physically able to safely work onboard ships and may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Desirable: Resourcefulness and ability to work independently under minimal supervision
