Job Overview

Network administrators play a critical role in the design, development, configuration, implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and support of the university's enterprise data and voice networks. They collaborate with team members at all levels to provide incident support, fulfill customer requests, research new technologies, and install network equipment. Additionally, they contribute to the development of solutions for network expansion and growth. Team members also actively participate in projects and initiatives assigned to network operations, ensuring the university's network infrastructure meets its evolving needs.
 

Essential Functions Assist in supporting and deploying networking technology, including LAN/WAN (wired switches and routers), WLAN (wireless access points and controllers), network security (VPN, firewalls, and authentication systems), network support (DNS/DHCP, network management), and telephony (VoIP) services; specific duties will vary according to the life cycle and the technical complexity of the network and associated hardware and software. Assist with configuration, maintenance, and management of enterprise network devices. Travel throughout the university’s campuses and to other remote facilities as necessary. Assist in monitoring network traffic, utilization, and performance, testing and evaluating network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements. Work with clients, technical staff and vendors on service request fulfillment, network implementation, optimization, and ongoing management. Assist in troubleshooting system failures working closely with senior technicians to restore functionality; monitor incoming incident reports and work with other departments and end users to resolve problems. After an initial six-month training period, participate in an after-hours Tier 2 support on-call rotation responding to network outage emergencies as defined in the department’s standard operating procedures; serve as the initial emergency escalation contact for Tier 1 (help desk) support. Develop and maintain documentation for network systems to be used by other engineers or the university community. Ensure the security of the university’s network by implementing the policies and practices that prevent and monitor unauthorized access, misuse or denial of service to a computer or other network-accessible resources. Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related field.

Two (2) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Trainings/Certifications

Valid driver's license with an acceptable record

Required Experience

Possess working knowledge of commonly used networking concepts, practices, and procedures.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Entry level (CCENT, Network+) or higher industry certification (can be substituted for experience)
