This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

Communications systems support safe train operations, provide information to the traveling public and supports security. HNTB is a leader in this field within the United States in all facets, from initial planning, through technical design, project management and through to construction support.

The HNTB Communications team is actively involved in providing services for transportation agencies across the country. This type of work involves design of fiber optic fiber optic cable system, high speed data network, radio systems, control systems, video surveillance, access control, Voice over IP (VoIP) and passenger information systems.

This is for an Entry Level Electrical engineer who will be actively involved in all aspects of the HNTB communications team assisting in the preparation of design calculations, drawings, specifications, engineering cost estimates, and field support for various rail projects. The position provides opportunities for advancement and growth in a unique specialized field.

As a New Grad Communications Engineer you assist in developing system-level designs with associated calculations and simulations, developing cable routing, preparing/producing contract specifications for contractors to follow, participating in project meetings, reviewing contractor submittals/RFIs, developing of CAD drawings from past project samples, learning and following the Quality Assurance process, supporting field verification, inspections, and testing, preparation of engineering estimating, packaging and checking of peer submittal documents, performing basic electrical load and voltage drop calculations, development of cable raceway designs and calculations to support, and performing interdisciplinary reviews to verify design submittals are coordinated within the associated rail disciplines.

The position is based out of our Chelmsford, Massachusetts office.

What You'll Do:

Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering

What You'll Bring:Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline.Attains knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCad or other software.Ability to organize information for use in drawings or other documentsProblem-solving skillsWritten and verbal communication skillsAbility to work independently as well as collaborativelyAn attitude that fosters adaptability, innovation, and proactiveness with a flexible work approach and coordinates with supervisors starting new tasks, developing design, and completing and closing out work tasks.Collaboration skills that works well with other engineering disciplines within the organization.

What We Prefer:Master's degree in Electrical EngineeringEngineer in Training (EIT) certificationKnowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCADExperience manipulating excel spreadsheets
