This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.
As part of a hardworking team of passionate, diverse, and accomplished experts, you will lead a team of Launch Vehicle Engineers and Maintenance Engineer in the execution of Operations & Maintenance Engineering scope on the fielded New Shepard reusable launch vehicles. You will be accountable for sustaining engineering support across the Avionics subsystem, including launch day Engineering Back Room support, overseeing the disposition of nonconforming and upgrade work to the fielded vehicles, and decision authority for risks, waivers, and Engineering Change Requests during the vehicle refurbishment cycle.
You will work in close collaboration with the Cognizant Engineers (CogE) who own all aspects of the Avionics lifecycle at the New Shepard program level to identify and implement design and/or process changes to improve system reliability and reduce operational cost and vehicle/ground system turn time. You will report directly to the Director, New Shepard Operations & Maintenance Engineering.
We are looking for an experienced technical leader with a demonstrate track record of performant, reliable systems to positively impact safe human spaceflight! Passion for our mission and vision is required!
Minimum Qualifications:
B.S. degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering
5+ years experience in spaceflight or aviation operations environment
Technical leadership experience (direct reports or project team)
Demonstrated track record in aerospace or related industry in the full life-cycle management of avionics aerospace hardware or complex technical systems.
Experience with aerospace systems engineering principles and processes including requirements derivation, configuration and change management, and verification planning and execution.
Proficiency in thermal-structural analysis including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS preferred)
A clear command of design release processes, PDM, and 3D CAD programs (Creo or Pro/E preferred)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills ranging from tactical/operational domains including writing/verifying work instructions to strategic and programmatic plans spanning the New Shepard fleet and flight manifest.
High aptitude for integrated system testing, troubleshooting, and diagnostics.
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
If based in Kent, WA, must be willing to travel to TX a minimum of 25% of the time
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering
8+ years experience in spaceflight or aviation operations environment
Experience with GD&T analysis (ASME Y14.5)
3+ years experience in integrated test instrumentation and data acquisition experience
Hands-on experience with building, testing, and maintaining Avionics systems
Compensation Range for:
WA applicants is $136,620.00-$191,268.00Other site ranges may differ
