Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technicians use specialized equipment and processes to monitor a patient's nervous system activity. They set up, perform, and monitor EEG tests which record the electrical activity of a patient's brain over time. EEG Technicians work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other doctors.
**A caregiver in this position works both 7:00am - 3:30pm and 7:00am-7:30pm.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Perform electroencephalographic examinations.
+ Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages) to obtain recordings, recognize artifacts and take appropriate steps to eliminate them.
+ Monitor on the same apparatus, other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc.
+ Observe patient with video recording equipment, ensure EEG and tape are lined up exactly, and check focus, lighting and microphone.
+ Set-up patient for continuous monitoring at the bedside with video, if indicated.
+ Instruct nursing caregivers on pushing event button and care of videos.
+ Abstract relevant information from the patients' clinical record and obtain additional information.
+ Successfully obtain the American Board of Registration for Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) credentialing for a Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) within two years of hire.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Associate's degree in electroneurodiagnostics or a related patient care field OR two years of direct patient care experience.
+ Completion of an EEG Technician Trainee program.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

**Physical Requirements:**
+ Manual dexterity in order to place electrodes precisely and to operate recording equipment.
+ Ability to push and maneuver EEG machine weighing 320 pounds and Evoked Potential machine weighing 420 pounds.
+ Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
+ Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
**Personal Protective Equipment:**
+ Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
