Job Summary

Support Cook Nuclear Plant operations, performing a variety of independent, non-routine and more complex quantitative analyses, program development, and use of sophisticated laboratory instrumentation. Independently performs, responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the sampling techniques, preparation, and chemical analysis of plant system, environmental, industrial hygiene, and support samples. Demonstrates the skills to evaluate analytical results and modify procedures within established limits based on sample matrix and quality control trends and performance of analytical instrumentation, to schedule work based on current anticipated workloads and deadlines, and participates as an integral part of problem solving and process improvement teams as assigned. Maintains a current awareness of industry issues and trends in program development and translates these changes into program implementation applicable to Cook Nuclear Plant. Maintains current plant licensing basis and works as a team to obtain and maintain license renewal extensions for plant operation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Perform daily system monitoring, adhere to policies and procedures, document daily operations and activities pertinent to area of responsibility, and perform problem solving and decision making within the department.Support development of programs, analysis methodologies, and implementation of environmental, health, regulatory, and safety policies for daily tasks.Perform program assessments and evaluations of program changes.Use scheduling techniques to work management, demonstrate proficiency in planning and scheduling the work to meet established deadlines.Follow and provide feedback on policies, practices, and standards and rules of the company and those regulations and procedures required by external regulatory agencies.Understand and practice safe laboratory procedures and safe plant operations, leads by example.Demonstrate ability to investigate and prepare reports for plant issues/variances and effectively communicate the results of these investigations.Develop reviews, prepare, and present technical reports on complex technical subjects clearly, concisely and effectively.Demonstrate ability to extrapolate beyond known facts, to model system conditions and chemistry, to reach logical conclusions about future conditions.Develop, coordinate, and conduct training and provides basic training and guidance to other employees.Identify and initiate solutions to routine and complex problems, which usually require additional definition or clarification before beginning evaluation or resolution.Make decisions, subject to review within established policies and procedures, concerning the validity of analytical test data.Manage conflicting interests related to approaches on programs, projects, or studies; analyzes options and risks.Provide input into the budgeting process. Develops understanding of the budgeting and approval process.Consistently looks for opportunities and presents new ideas and approaches.Effectively communicate issues and issue resolution options to plant management and supervision proactively.Maintain all required performance indicators system health reports for area of responsibility and effectively communicate these to plant personnel.Maintain all required plant qualifications to effectively implement the responsibilities for this position.Perform Emergency Response Organization responsibilities as assigned and fulfill on-duty callout requirements.Act as On-Duty Chemist for off-hours technical calls from Chemistry Technicians and other plant personnel.Fill the role as backup to other programs and areas for continued effective implementation while the primary person is gone.Work with vendors to provide plant support and in making necessary design changes to maintain plant chemistry monitoring and operation.Coordinate Chemistry Section outage preparation activities.Participate in industry leading organizations, such as EPRI, to successfully establish workable guidelines for nuclear chemistry.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education requirements are listed below: Bachelor degree in science or related Science field.

Work Experience requirement listed below: Fourteen years' experience in related Science field, including six years' experience in a plant chemical laboratory or related utility or industrial chemical experience.

Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below: Possess a valid state drivers license.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Physical demand level is Sedentary

Must be able to learn and comply with the rules, safety practices and procedures applicable to the work environment and report unsafe conditions and practices.Must learn and have a working knowledge of Safety and Environmental guidelines.Must be able to read, interpret and work from simple prints and specifications.Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written, are required for this position.Demonstrate professional conduct and effective interactions with employees, contractors and others.Demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.Must be able to work around hazardous chemicals and potentially contaminated matrices and safely handle radioactive liquids/gases/solids.Physical Demands: Must be able to climb stairs and move about within the plant power block. May perform walk downs in plant environment which may include exposure to; heat, cold, noise, and radiation exposure.

Salary range is from minimum to mid-point.

Nuclear Chemist: $94,225 - $122,419

Must establish & maintain a permanent residence within a 45-minute safe drive time to the D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant.
