Nuclear Engineer (Deputy Program Manager Commissioned Submarines)
Summary The Deputy Administrator for Naval Reactors is also the Director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and the Deputy Commander, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Directorate, Naval Sea Systems Command. Responsibilities for this Program area are contained in Executive Order 12344 of 1 February 1982, which is codified in 42 U.S.C. §7158 and 50 U.S.C. §§ 2401 and 2406. Responsibilities As a Nuclear Engineer (Deputy Program Manager Commissioned Submarines), you will: Directs and coordinates support for overhaul, repair, maintenance, modification, and inactivation of nuclear submarine reactor plant systems in assigned nuclear-powered submarines. Administers reactor plant planning yard and design yard operations and services in support of all commissioned submarines. Oversees execution of policy regarding modifications to, and configuration control of, reactor plants in all commissioned nuclear submarines. Convenes Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) senior managers to coordinate and propose Program and Division policy, concerning overall NNPP policy execution including establishing standards for execution of naval nuclear powered fleet support requirements, when in the Acting Program Manager role. Directs and coordinates efforts of personnel in the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Navy (DON), shipyard lead design agents, reactor plant design agents, reactor plant planning yards, reactor plant prime contractors, ships force, Submarine Type Commanders, Submarine Squadron Commanders, and intermediate maintenance activities in accomplishing repairs, maintenance, modification, and inactivation of reactor plants in assigned nuclear-powered submarines. Defines and resolves technical, administrative, contractual, and funding problems and implementing prompt con-active actions to ensure the timely completion of reactor plant repair, maintenance, modification, and inactivation. Coordinates efforts within the Naval Reactors Program to reduce the cost of depot level maintenance by eliminating unnecessary requirements and identifying emergent technologies, which can streamline depot level operations consistent with the rigid technical requirements of the Naval Reactor Program. Coordinates with NAVSEA Systems Command to ensure changes to reduce cost of non-nuclear work in submarines are technically compatible with all reactor plant requirements. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Extensive knowledge of advanced principles of nuclear engineering. Knowledge of application of nuclear propulsion to the design, construction, repair, maintenance, modernization, testing and operation of naval nuclear reactor plants, and nuclear safety regulations, practices, and procedures to ensure health and safety. Knowledge of the application of nuclear propulsion to ship design. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGINEER: Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Engineering OR Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate professional field, provided you have had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. OR Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum. OR Current registration as a Professional Engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico allows eligibility only if your registration is within or closely related to nuclear engineering Foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
