Job Summary
Instructional staff for the nurse anesthesia program will require anesthesia professionals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Duties for the Spring semesters of employment include simulation laboratory organization and inventory in addition to teaching evidence based technical skills for student simulation days. Summer semesters include 8 days for teaching evidence-based student skills in the simulation laboratory. Fall semesters include 10 simulation/working days will be required. The staff will gain valuable experience toward a career in nursing education and assist in preparing new students for their upcoming role in administering anesthesia.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
+ Along with a full-time faculty member, instructional staff member of the NAP will mentor 4 – 6 DNP students as their bi-annual evaluation faculty member.
+ If the instructional staff is interested in teaching didactic courses, they may choose to design two evidence-based lectures using required program textbooks and current anesthesia/nursing literature. This is optional and is meant to offer an opportunity to build teaching skills.
+ Staff will assist with simulation days for student “pass offs”, full OR simulations, and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). This is variable by semester as is outlined in the Job Summary above, and dates will be pre-planned in collaboration with the other faculty.
+ Assist in NAP interview admission processes as desired. A schedule will be provided and you may select the dates available to participate.
+ Use a variety of instructional strategies to engage students in learning for simulation based assignments.
+ Communicates with assigned students via email, video/Zoom, or phone when needed for schedule and simulation time appointments and clarification, simulation practice, biannual evaluations, and other responsibilities.
+ Participates in person or virtually in 70% of departmental meetings.
+ Evaluates student performance fairly using provided rubrics and anecdotal input to program administrator.
+ Assists NAP faculty with programmatic events as needed.
+ Meets bi-annually with assigned students for didactic and clinical performance check-ins and completes associated paperwork.
+ Assists in maintaining simulation laboratory organization and submitting supply order to administrator as needed.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a licensed, practicing nurse anesthetist (CRNA) in good standing with the Mississippi Board of Nursing, hold a doctorate degree in nursing (DNP, PhD, EdD, DHA) and have a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the clinical setting.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Utilizes personal computer, computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point) typewriter, photocopy machine, fax machine, and telephone. Ability to learn virtual meeting platform use such as Zoom, Teams, and Gotomeeting. Also uses standard office equipment such as stapler, staple remover, and scissors.
+ Skill in computer keyboard use. Basic knowledge and skill of maneuvering within Windows-based software applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Basic knowledge and skill on Internet browsers to access web sites. Basic knowledge and skill of using email to send and receive correspondence. Proficiency in using search engines and web-based applications for research. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access for reports and documents. Knowledge and skill in incorporating software tools and equipment into office procedures.
+ Language Skills: Good to excellent writing skills with a knowledge of APA formatting. Excellent communication skills with verbal and email communication.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
+ Organization: Enjoys organizing and logically assembling simulation equipment and supplies while understanding that it is a ongoing process as students to not always return things to its’ required place.
Preferred Qualifications
The desired applicant will exhibit professional behavior both personally and in email communication and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferably, the applicant will have a strong comprehensive grasp on didactic areas involved in anesthesia and excellent clinical skills. The expectation is that applicant will utilize evidence based practices and information to relay to the students, even it is not what the practitioner sees in clinical practice. This is a very important aspect of this position. The applicant will be patient in teaching students with all types of personalities and learning styles, is flexible in their approach to teaching, respects the role research plays in the big picture of developing procedures and policies for clinical practice, and is a very professional role model for the student.
The ideal applicant will demonstrate a high level of self-discipline and self-motivation and can motivate students to succeed. We desire a student supportive, detail oriented, cooperative person to fill our position. Preferably, we desire someone who has an interest in a career as a nurse anesthesia educator in the future.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Will frequently supervise College of Nursing and Health Professions students practicing skills in the simulation lab.
