Provides full-spectrum nursing care to patients on a multi-service ward receiving services or recovering from, but not limited to, the following: Telemetry/Cardiac (e.g., rule out myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, placement of implantable defibrillators & pacemakers), Medical (e.g., complex infections requiring airborne and contact precautions), Surgical: gynecological, behavioral health, general surgery (e.g., complicated wound care to include placement and troubleshooting wound vacs) orthopedic, oral and maxillofacial, urology, podiatry, Ears, Nose, and Throat (ENT), ophthalmology, bariatric, & cardiac procedures (implantable pacemakers/defibrillators & heparin infusions). Formulates an age-appropriate nursing care plan based on medical, pre- and post-surgical, physician’s medical care plan, full nursing assessment, medical history, physiological, psychological, and sociological condition, strengths and limitations; in accordance with standards of practice, licensed independent provider (LIP), and established procedures. Provides ongoing and in-depth assessment of patient problems, strengths, and limitations, assessing condition, review of data collected through observations of variations from norms, and precise calculation of fluid levels and vital signs. Identifies wellness and risk factors, notifies health care provider if current care plan requires revision, and modifies the nursing care plan as needed. Utilizes professional nursing methods and processes to identify and manage immediate health care needs for non-urgent patient problems. Recommends self-care, as appropriate, for nursing assessment, and as advised by approved clinical protocols. Administers oxygen, IV fluid, blood transfusion and prescribed oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications. Administers and supports infusion therapy services to patients in need of this service. Administer enteral feedings and parenteral nutrition per provider and nutritionist recommendations. Sets up, operates, and monitors medical equipment such as stat strip glucose machine, oxygen masks, ambu bags, intravenous infusion pumps, wall suction, pleurovacs, cardiovascular monitors, EKG machines and others. Remains aware of the patient’s condition and takes appropriate action as needed. Interprets lab results and other findings and reports them to the healthcare provider when those findings indicate a deterioration of the patient’s condition. Manages nasal-pharyngeal and gastric suction as well as a variety of other drainage tubes. Performs various pulmonary treatments such as oxygen and nebulizer therapy and walk of life assessments. Administers and monitors the use of therapeutic agents (medications) and pain-relieving drugs, including: patient-controlled analgesia, narcotics, and antibiotics, familiar with correct dosages and potential side effects. Administers blood, crystalloids, and fluids as prescribed. Assists with activities of daily living (e.g., meal tray set up, bathing, and toileting), assists patients in walking, moving, and changing positions and prevents obstruction, dislodgment, and unnecessary movement of drainage, suction, and parenteral fluid apparatus. Recognizes significant and life-threatening changes in patient condition, including changes in cardiac rhythm evidenced by telemetry, and determines and implements the proper emergency life saving measures in accordance with the level of certification. Provides comprehensive, multi-disciplinary treatment for acute safety crises, medication monitoring, and stabilization of acute symptoms to support the safe transfer of care to the IBHU, ICU or outpatient settings. 2. Patient education and psychosocial support. Provides specialized information and education related to patient’s illness and disease process, pre- and post-operative care, diagnostic procedures, use of equipment related to disease/care, expected and possible adverse reactions to medications, health maintenance, and illness prevention. Makes referral of patients/family members to allied health care providers such as the community health nurse, social work, and community agencies. Maximizes use of unit’s resources for manageable patients to avoid unnecessary health complications. Communicates with other staff members and inpatient units to maintain continuity of care. 3. Performs the duties of charge nurse of an assigned shift and assumes the responsibility for promoting quality, cost-effective nursing care within the framework of the philosophy and mission objectives of the Department of Nursing and the Command. Exercises delegated authority and responsibility to implement, coordinate, and supervise nursing care for assigned shift. As charge nurse, uses management skills to identify, distribute, and balance workload and tasks among personnel based on their competency level and experience, makes adjustment to assignments to accomplish work in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of tasks and procedures. Monitors and reports on status and progress of work. Reviews completed work to ensure supervisor’s instructions on work priorities, methods, quality, and deadlines have been met. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees, patients, and other interdisciplinary team members and refers issues to supervisors or appropriate management person as appropriate. Monitors safety hazard in the work environment and takes immediate action to resolve or correct them. Orients and precepts new staff members to the unit, assisting in the onboarding process and encouraging nurse development and teamwork. Performs other duties as assigned. **Qualifications** Must be a United States Citizen Must possess a valid Registered Nurse License that has not elapsed/expired. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). **Licensure:** A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your current licensure.). **Foreign Degree:** Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools Certification Program.
