The specific duties are to develop and provide formal education materials with the Trans Care BC team for dissemination to other nursing and clinical staff in other programs and organizations throughout BC. Experience and demonstratable expertise in writing clinical, academic, and evidence-informed educational resources is a must. This role does not provide direct patient care, carry its own patient caseload, supervise other staff, or formally advise other nursing staff on nursing practice.
We are looking for someone who has:
• Demonstrated clinical experience in the provision of gender-affirming perinatal care services working directly with patients and families from fertility to infant feeding, and lactation induction.
• Sound knowledge of current practice approaches and “Best Practice” standards both in the delivery of gender affirming care in the designated clinical area and the provision of clinical education to health care professionals.
• Demonstrated clinical experience working with Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people or experience and ongoing relations with the 2SLGBT2QIA+ communities.
Job Summary:

The Nurse Educator collaborates across programs, utilizes evidence-informed practice and education theory; promotes and models gender affirming care, supports the development of quality education activities; and delivers formal group or individual educational activities to health care providers and others that will achieve the most effective outcomes. The Nurse Educator promotes education practices that are consistent with established policies, standards and strategic directions of Trans Care BC, working with health authorities, medical and community staff and practitioners to identify learning needs in providing gender affirming care. The Nurse Educator communicates with health care teams across the province as needed, working to build capacity for care to be provided closer to home and works with staff at Trans Care BC to ensure best system navigation and supports are identified based on client need. The Nurse Educator is responsible for the development, implementation, delivery and evaluation of core educational materials and trainings for health care providers, and measures education plan success and amends plans accordingly.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Assists in environmental scans and needs assessments for educational materials and trainings to increase capacity for health care providers to provide gender affirming care; assesses individual and group learning needs in collaboration with Professional Practice, the Trans Care BC team, and/or internal and external stakeholders, analyzing data such as growth plans, practice changes and quality improvement indicators, to determine specific educational requirements.
2. Utilizes educational/curriculum theory and knowledge of gender affirming care practice to design, develop, implement and evaluate clinical education materials and trainings for health care professionals in collaboration with the Manager and interdisciplinary team members; trainings include programs for current health professionals relevant post-secondary educational programs, continuing education sessions and cross-cultural caring programs.
3. Utilizes a variety of teaching/learning strategies to support clinical education activities with individuals and groups including facilitating groups, coaching, mentoring, conducting formal/informal presentations and demonstrations, using educational technology and self-directed learning methods to implement planned programs. Facilitates scheduling of education sessions by collaborating with the Trans care BC team, health care professionals, clients and families to determine times, frequency and duration to ensure effective use of resources.
4. Provides direct clinical education or training to new and existing health care professionals as required and facilitates learning by role modeling direct patient care skills and practices , promoting skill development, and providing feedback to ensure care is provided according to Trans Care BC’s gender affirming care standards and clinical practice guidelines.
5. Facilitates learning by acting as a clinical resource and demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice by reviewing literature and, consulting with community experts, evaluating clinical practice systems/standards, identifying new theories/trends/education programs, developing new/revised standards and presenting educational sessions based upon specialized body of knowledge to enhance quality patient care.
6. Participates in the evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical education programs, activities and resources by analyzing learning outcomes using program/resource evaluation, learner behaviours, utilization statistics and reviewing feedback to determine opportunities for quality improvement.
7. Develops, reviews, and modifies learning resources and clinical practice reference documents for health care professionals, clients and/or families using established educational standards, and ensuring content reflects the most up-to-date best practice. Strives to match content and delivery method. Provides feedback to other developers to ensure resources are current, relevant, cost effective and coordinated.
8. Participates in working groups, committees, or meetings as a clinical education resource by providing input and suggestions related to education implications and group processes of new initiatives to ensure that clinical educational needs are addressed. Documents educational process and utilization statistics by maintaining database and records and by providing written and verbal reports to demonstrate accountability and to continuously improve the quality of clinical education services.
9. Sets measurable goals and objectives within a team environment, incorporating the organization’s vision and values, goals and corporate plan. Develops plans in collaboration with designated personnel/team for professional development. Reviews progress to ensure goals are achieved within established timeframes.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN or RPN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
• Three (3) years of recent related clinical experience in the designated clinical area with the designated client group, including one (1) year in an educational or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated clinical experience in the provision of gender affirming primary care for trans and gender diverse patients.
• Sound knowledge of current practice approaches and “Best Practice” standards both in the delivery of gender affirming care and the provision of clinical education to health care professionals and others.
