Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education.

Requirements

·       To qualify:

·       The Nurse Extern orientation is the week of May 12th. Monday – Friday; 8AM to 4:30PM (MUST ATTEND ENTIRE WEEK)

You are required to work 40 hours between May 18th-28th.   Testing will be May 29th or 30th.

 

o   Enrolled in nursing school

·       MUST bring transcripts to first day to show completed clinicals

 

o   Completion of two clinical rotations, 1 being med/surg

§  Med/surg rotation must be completed prior to start date, not required for offer.

·       To remain in role:

o   Actively enrolled in nursing school (Graduation date no sooner than January of 2026—please reply with month and year of estimated graduation date)

o   Successfully complete each course

o   Provide transcripts to managers after each course

 

·       Most managers prefer their externs be in the role for at least 1 year. 

Required Hours

·       8 hours/ 1 shift per week if attending school in the area

·       Additional hours worked should be as a nurse assistant

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing (BSN schools preferred). The completion of two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg (in an acute care setting). To remain in the extern role you MUST: Actively be enrolled in a nursing program; Successfully complete each course; Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each course; Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager. If at any point the extern does not meet their academic institution's standard for continued enrollment in the school of nursing classes, their employment as an extern will be rescinded. BLS Healthcare provider to be completed during orientation. Physical ability to lift and move patients, supplies, and equipment with appropriate technique/device. Successful completion of 180-day introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.
