Nurse Extern - Summer 2025

Inova is accepting applications for our Nurse Extern – 2025 Summer Program 

The Summer Nurse Extern Program is designed for nursing students to participate the summer before senior year from nursing school! 

Inova offers an opportunity to gain valuable experience to allow you to grow in confidence and knowledge!

4 start dates: May 19, May 26, June 9, June 16 The duration of the Externship is 8 weeks, full time hours. Externs must be available to attend all 8 weeks. This is a paid position.  A typical schedule is 3 twelve hour shifts per week. Externs must be able to work Day, Night, or Rotating shift. Please note: Externs will be hired into one of our 5 hospital locations (Fairfax, Fair Oaks, Alexandria, Mount Vernon or Loudoun).

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a nursing degree program and have successfully completed at least one acute care clinical rotation

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern 1 delivers basic nursing care and monitoring in accordance with completed competencies and unit needs. Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities to enhance practice knowledge base. Participates in quality improvement initiatives as directed by the RN. Assists the healthcare team in implementing the plan of care and achieving desired patient and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration.

Job Responsibilities

Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) on the plan of care for patient assignments. Provides basic nursing care which is deemed competent under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists with treatments and procedures under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists with unit needs to improve patient flow and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration and while working with the team to achieve maximum productivity. Assists RN and other members of the healthcare team in gathering basic monitoring data and specimen collection. Observes and reports any patient symptoms and/or change in patient conditions to the appropriate RN. Evaluates and maintains the environment to promote patient and healthcare team safety. Documents all patient care activities on assigned patients in accordance with documentation standards. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times. Attends simulation exercises as assigned. Completes extern training, skill competency checklist and simulation labs. Performs other duties as assigned.


Additional Requirements

Currently enrolled in a nursing degree program Minimum GPA of 3.0 Successful completion of one acute care clinical rotation Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification through AHA Proficient in English verbal and written communication Must provide one faculty letter of recommendation
