The Nurse Manager is an integral part of the hospital's leadership team, and champions our top priority of delivering high quality safe care to psychiatric patients in an acute facility. The Nurse Manager understands the regulations that govern hospital services and provides clear direction to the team to meet all regulation requirements. POSITION TITLE: Nurse Manager PAY RANGE: $159,993-$164,985 annually REPORTS TO: Chief Nursing Officer The Nurse Manager performs key responsibilities and meets position requirements as outlined in the hospital’s RN job description. In addition to RN duties, the Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for unit operations, fiscal and staff management, managing patient care services and coordinating staff scheduling. The Nurse Manager will support and direct nursing staff assignments and facilitate communication with other disciplines, departments and community resources. This includes direct supervision of employees and conducting performance evaluations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Unit Operations + In conjunction with peer Nurse Managers and CNO, maintains 24-hour accountability for the success of assigned units. + Oversees unit operations including (and not limited to) timely completion and review of multidisciplinary treatment plans (MTP); checking logs (refrigerator, emergency cart log, POC testing, legal tracking logs); and PYXIS discrepancy resolution. + Responsible for accurate and timely completion of all nursing documentation. + Alerts the Administrator on Call (AOC) when urgent or extreme events occur. Examples include, but are not limited to, AWOL patients, patient injuries, staff injuries, and incidents involving law enforcement. + Reviews House Supervisor daily end-of-shift report and follows up as needed. + Prepares and investigates Incident Reports (IR) in an accurate and timely fashion; follows up with staff education to prevent reoccurring incidents. + Maintains a clutter free working environment. Fiscal and Staff Management + Ensures cost effective labor & supply resource management. + Through close working relationships with the House Supervisors and Charge RNs, directly and indirectly supervises nursing staff on assigned units. + Collects staff performance data from the House Supervisors to ensure proper supervision and to provide accurate meaningful introductory and annual performance evaluations. Reviews performance evaluations with CNO before reviewing with staff. + Collaborates with CNO to address performance concerns or potential need for staff disciplinary measures. + Supports CNO, House Supervisors, and nursing staff to provide a high-quality orientation and ongoing education for clinical staff. Ensures staff education on key issues relating to hospital policies and procedures and health care regulations. + Ensures accurate and timely shift-to-shift reports are completed by charge nurses. Manage Patient Care Services + Monitors clinical issues for high acuity patients or patients with unusual problems. + In conjunction with hospital leaders, addresses and resolves patient and family complaints. Proactively works with CNO when a complaint becomes a potential grievance and alerts the hospital’s Internal Patient Advocate. Staff Scheduling + Monitors all nursing staff attendance records cards for unapproved overtime, missed meal periods, and patterns of attendance and punctuality. Completes time records for all staff and forward to payroll each pay period. Analyzes and approves online time cards in a timely fashion. + Works closely with the Staffing Scheduling Coordinator to prepare staff schedules to ensure appropriate staffing levels for upcoming shifts. Reviews staff level concerns with CNO. Requirements POSITION Requirements Education/Licensure + Current California RN License + Bachelors Degree in Nursing + Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification (or obtained during initial orientation period). + Verbal de-escalation and physical intervention program as approved by the CNO. + Knowledge and experience of psychiatric diagnosis and associated risks, medications, biological systems, nursing process, treatment planning, and leadership. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES The NM will pass initial and annual competency evaluations including (not limited to): suicide prevention, safe use of restraints, de-escalation interventions, medication knowledge, code blue/emergency interventions, infection prevention, and appropriate use of seclusion and restraints. The NM will need to complete additional competencies related to managing patient care, staffing systems, and internal reporting requirements. The Nurse Manager has a high level of knowledge of Policies, Procedures, Unit Operations, Hospital Operations, Health Care Regulations and educates staff on key issues. The NM will demonstrate that, in addition to being competent, they are skilled in applying knowledge and competency in their daily nursing practice. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to do the following: + Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained period of time. + Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from a lower to higher position or horizontally from position to position or otherwise move objects. + Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips. + Express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly. + Perceive the nature of sound with no less than a 40 db loss @ 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction. + Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. + Able to provide manual and mechanical restraints for patients who are physically acting out and are potentially dangerous (at times this occurs on the floor) + Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction. + While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.
