Nurse Practitioner

The Nurse Practitioner/ET Nurse, Wound/Ostomy/Continence Services is a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner who provides acute and rehabilitative care for people with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. The NURSE PRACTITIONER/ET NURSE offers direct patient care, education, and counseling for persons with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, vascular ulcers, and skin problems related to fecal and urinary continence.  (S)he functions as an NURSE PRACTITIONER/ET NURSE within the Wound Ostomy Clinic and Clinician for Wound Ostomy/Continence Services in the St. Mary Medical Center inpatient setting when need arises.  (S)he demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient population served. The NURSE PRACTITIONER/ET NURSE serves as a clinical resource, consultant, researcher, and educator to the medical and nursing staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating care based on NURSE PRACTITIONER/ET NURSE specialized area of expertise, physician orders, current established Standards of Care, the Nurse Practice Act and the St. Mary Medical Center Policies and Procedures and Medical Staff bylaws, rules and responsibilities. Goals and priorities are established in accordance with patient/staff needs and organizational objectives. These endeavors are conducted, in a positive attitude, within the established objectives, policies, procedures, and philosophical framework of the Department of Patient Care Services and The St. Mary Medical Center. They are directed toward the achievement of excellence in patient care. .

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

 

Must have successfully completed an accredited program for a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner with a master’s degree of nursing preferred; licensed to practice in the State of Indiana with 2 years current experience preferred in wound and ostomy/continence care.  Completion of a WOCN Accredited Professional Education Program and WOCN certification preferred. Documentation of prescriptive authority granted by the State of Indiana and a valid controlled substance certification must be on file in the Medical Staff Services Department prior to ordering of medications.  Must successfully complete credentialing and privileging process before functioning as an Advanced Practice Nurse.  Demonstration of completion of an advanced physical assessment class.  Successful completion of the St. Mary Medical Center Personnel and Nursing Orientation Programs.  Completes continuing education as required by certification.  Member of appropriate professional organization.  Obtains and maintains current CPR Certification.  Computer literacy with familiarity of Windows and database management.
