Responsibilities

The Patient Blood Management (PBM) APP will be directly involved in the development and expansion of a new clinical practice, the Mayo Clinic Preoperative Anemia Clinic. Clinical responsibilities in this practice may include: evaluation of patients presenting with anemia prior to surgery, determination of causes of anemia, prescription of appropriate treatments, making appropriate referrals for those who may require additional diagnostic evaluations, and performing follow-up evaluations for responses to treatment. This program was initiated in late 2019 in a pilot fashion in cardiac surgery and has now expanded to include several other surgery practices in Rochester. Additionally, the PBM APP will be involved in several other initiatives of the broader Mayo Clinic PBM program, including the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery program, which is responsible for the optimization of Mayo Clinic patients for whom allogeneic blood products is not an option. While most clinical responsibilities will be confined to the outpatient environment, including both face-to-face and virtual consultations, inpatient consultations may at times be required for patients who are already hospitalized. Candidates must be willing to take initiative in developing and improving novel clinical programs, which will include close communication with stakeholders from across the practice. The candidate must be fully committed to working as part of a multidisciplinary PBM team including RN coordinators and physician medical directors. The ideal candidate should have an intimate understanding of surgical workflows in the Mayo Clinic Rochester practice and a basic understanding of anemia management and transfusion practices.
