Nursing Supervisor, Emergency Dept & Nursing Professional Development

The Nursing Supervisor for the Emergency Department oversees nursing, support staff, and patient care activities while focusing on the professional development and education of nursing staff. This role acts as a clinical resource, supports site-level and system initiatives, and promotes Aurora Health Care's nursing practice framework.

Major Responsibilities:

Provides work direction to staff, coordinates resources to support procedures, daily operations, and patient flow, and promotes an environment conducive to quality patient care. Advocates for the rights of patients and staff.Facilitates communication among patients, families, hospital departments, and medical staff, and acts as a liaison and problem solver between medical and nursing staff.Develops and maintains effective intra- and inter-departmental relationships, ensures compliance with policies and regulatory agencies, and evaluates the quality of patient care through collaboration with unit and organization resource people.In collaboration with the manager, conducts ongoing process improvement, serves as a clinical resource, and develops orientation and continuing education programs for all staff in collaboration with departmental and organizational staff.Provides input regarding equipment/supply needs, renovations, and environmental issues in preparation for operating and capital equipment budgets. Supports Shared Leadership and its functions related to Nursing Evaluation, Peer Review, Policy/Procedures, and Standards of Nursing Practice.Performs human resources responsibilities, including coaching on performance, completing performance reviews, and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations. Ensures compliance with the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and applicable policies, regulations, and laws.Supports the orientation process, competency management, and designs educational activities to address practice gaps. Utilizes best practice standards and adult learning principles.Collaborates with leadership to meet education needs, adjusts materials and teaching strategies based on learner needs, and evaluates the impact of programming. Establishes and implements evaluation tools and methodologies to identify needs or gaps in the knowledge, skills, and competencies of nursing personnel.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which the team member practices.


Education Required:

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.


Experience Required:

Typically requires 3 years of experience in an inpatient nursing unit environment.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills necessary.Ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift.Will be exposed to the following hazards on a continuous basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluids; will be required to wear gloves, goggles and gowns on an as-needed basis.Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
