The Hindu Chaplain will support and guide Hindu life at New York University (NYU) by serving as a spiritual guide, mentor, and advocate for students. Through Hindu student program and leadership development, spiritual direction, pastoral care, crisis care, and education, they support the flourishing of Hindu student life at NYU and the multifaith imperatives of GSL.
The Hindu Chaplain will build on existing connections on the campus and across NYU in all relevant areas, and develop new relationships as appropriate, especially with others who have responsibility for caring for students, and with student Hindu clubs.
This is a part-time position (2 days per week)
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $20,000-$25,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Role and Responsibility:
+ To lead the Hindu Center at NYU and provide support to the Hindu Student Union and any other relevant Hindu student groups and societies.
+ To lead the NYU Hindu community in ritual and practice, and serve as a resource and expert to the University on questions of Hindu religious needs, beliefs, customs, and accommodations.
+ Develop multifaith and spiritual programming and learning opportunities that are inclusive of all faith traditions on campus. Programs should focus on religious literacy, interfaith community building, and normalizing the experiences of students of faith.
+ Provide student support through individual pastoral counseling and crisis care, including vigils and memorials.
+ Speak on behalf of the University at gatherings and events hosted by NYU and beyond, while adhering to NYU policies.
+ Cultivate relationships with each of the colleges to provide tailored spiritual support to their respective student bodies.
+ Participate in regularly scheduled stakeholder meetings (e.g. Campus Religious Centers).
+ Facilitate workshops, develop curriculum, and teach in cohort learning programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Training and/or ordination in Hinduism and the Hindu scriptures and traditions.
+ Master's degree; field of study for degree in Religion, Theology, Education, or related field.
+ One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent, is required.
+ Ordination or Endorsement is preferred.
+ A welcoming, Global Inclusion, Diversity, Belonging, Equity, and Access (IDBEA)-centered theological paradigm and desire to work in a multi-faith environment.
+ Demonstrated commitment to racial justice.
+ An enthusiastic interest in exploring chaplaincy within the ever-shifting context of higher education.
+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with college students and with individuals of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
+ Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, along with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies within the university and beyond.
+ Strong leadership skills and ability to be an effective community builder.
+ Skills in counseling, crisis management, conflict resolution.
+ Knowledge of diverse religious and spiritual traditions.
