About the Role
As NZ Texts Lead, you’ll own the P&L and drive the success of our legal texts and custom content publishing program. This is a 12-month, part-time (0.7 FTE) parental leave cover role, based in Auckland or Wellington (hybrid/home-based). You’ll coach junior commissioning editors, manage key relationships with authors and partners, and help shape the future of legal publishing in New Zealand.
Responsibilities
Manage all NZ text publications (print/digital), delivering ~15 books/year
Oversee budgets, costs, and revenue for the texts portfolio
Develop new content proposals and present business cases
Build and maintain relationships with authors, stakeholders, and the legal community
Liaise with marketing and sales to maximise commercial outcomes
Provide coaching and support to junior commissioning editors (no direct reports)
Ensure projects are delivered on time, to budget, and to quality standards
Requirements
3–5 years’ experience in commissioning/editorial or similar publishing roles
Strong commercial acumen and financial management skills (budgets, P&L)
Excellent project management and stakeholder liaison abilities
Law degree (or adjacent field: accounting, tax, politics, economics) highly regarded
Awareness of the NZ legal market and publishing workflow
Leadership and coaching skills (without direct reports)
Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills
