Job Type: On-Call, Variable-Time

Compensation: $35 - $45 per hour, based on relevant experience

This position is expected to work 8-10 hours per day, 6 days per week. This position is primarily a field-based position with minimal office time anticipated.

JOB SUMMARY: The Desert Tortoise Authorized Biologist is responsible for providing environmental inspection and monitoring during the construction of large-scale construction projects with the goal of ensuring resource protection measures are being implemented to protect sensitive resources including the desert tortoise.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions:

Desert Tortoise clearance surveys and monitoring

Special status plant and wildlife surveys, noxious weed surveys and nesting bird surveys

Field coordination with crews as needed

Communication with contractor and agencies as needed

Document and report impacts to sensitive resources

Track progress of construction activities and implementation of approved mitigation measures 

Inspect construction vehicles and equipment for cleanliness

Work collaboratively with construction and regulatory personnel to develop solutions and implement permit conditions

Photo document ecological site conditions

Prepare daily reports

Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings

Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s and Eocene Environmental Group’s culture of safety and employee ownership

Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Degree in biology, natural resource management, environmental studies or similar

Previous authorization for Mojave Desert Tortoise Biologist Authorized by USFWS

Ability to work long hours in potentially extreme weather conditions

Competence using global positioning system units, maps, iPads, and submeter accuracy devices

The ability to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain

The ability to perform work duties independently or as part of a team

Clear communicator, highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, and dependable

A working knowledge of standard office computer software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access).

Prior experience working in Utah, Arizona, and California or Nevada

Ability to relocate close to the project, as needed

Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Previous authorization for Mojave Desert Tortoise Biologist Authorized by CDFW and BLM

Experience leading a field team, capable of managing work assignments with team members, troubleshooting in the field

Experience conducting desert tortoise health assessments

Experience conducting radio telemetry and desert tortoise translocations/relocations

Experience capturing or handling wildlife species using specialized equipment

Plant and plant community identification skills for species common to the Mojave Desert

Experience working with utility companies

Survey experience with any of the following species: Mohave ground squirrel, Burrowing Owl, Kit Fox, Swainson’s Hawk, American Badger, Logger Head Shrike, Lane Mountain Milk Vetch, Clokey’s cyptantha, Desert Cymopterus, Barstow wooly sunflower, Mojave Menodora, Creamy blazing star, Mojave Monkeyflower, Bever dam breadroot, Parish’s phacelia, or Mojave Spine Flower, Las Vegas Bear Poppy

Experience conducting avian point count surveys and raven management actions

Strong technical report writing skills
