Position Summary: 

The Oncology nurse navigator is a professional registered nurse with surgical knowledge who offers individualized assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Utilizing the nursing process, the nurse navigator provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the surgical continuum.

Essential Duties:

Educate patients about their disease, prescribed treatment, and side effects of treatment and how to manage themAnswer questions as appropriate and serve as liaison to the physician for additional questions and concernsProvide clinical resources -- where to seek a second opinion, treatment or testing that may not be available locally, and how to access reliable sources of informationAssess patients for psychosocial distress and referral to a licensed social worker or counselor if more intensive support is neededAddress tangible barriers to care such as finances, housing, transportation, childcare, prescription costs, etc.Refer patients to the appropriate contact, such as a social workerEnsure any health information provided is accessible: this may include securing documents printed in the patient’s own language or arranging for certified medical interpretation, either in-person or by phone/videoconferenceFunction as a member of an interdisciplinary team to assess, secure, and coordinate appropriate services through the continuum of careEmpower patients, families, and caregivers to assume as much responsibility for their care as possible, within the constraints of age, illness, and other factorsIn consultation with other members of the healthcare team, promote awareness of clinical trials as appropriateSupport timely scheduling of appointments, diagnostic testing, and proceduresEducate/identify patients for genetic counseling or fertility preservation, and facilitate appropriate referrals

Education and Experience:

Graduate of an NLN accredited program; BSN preferredValid State of Maine RN licenseAbility to prioritize and reprioritize quicklyAbility to develop collaborative relationships both internally and externallyStrong verbal and written communication skillsAbility to work autonomouslyWorking knowledge of insurance coverage, managed care and community resources
