Successful candidates will demonstrate the interest and ability to lead faculty from Philosophy, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the College of Health Professions to grow our department’sMS in Bioethics (https://utrgv.smartcatalogiq.com/en/2024-2025/graduate-catalog/graduate-academic-programs-by-college/college-of-liberal-arts/department-of-philosophy/bioethics-ms-online-program/) by working across disciplinary lines, seeking grant-funding, and recruiting graduate students. Candidates should have the qualifications to teach in-person as well as online courses for the MS, which include but are not limited to: Theories of Bioethics and Health Care; Ethics in Biomedical Research; Methods of Inquiry in Bioethics; Health Law and Policy; Philosophy of Medicine; Human Rights, Justice, and Health; Bioethics and the Border; etc. Candidates whose research also engages with the messiness of the actual world—e.g., social and political factors in healthcare such as gender and socioeconomic status, environmental factors and their justice implications, practical ethics for healthcare workers, legal aspects of bioethics, issues related to AI and new technologies, etc.—are especially welcome. Minimum Qualifications · Assistant Professor – Ph.D. in Philosophy, Bioethics, Healthcare Ethics, or closely related field from an accredited university is required prior to the Fall 2025 start date. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by August 31st, 2025 is required for appointment. Must present evidence of active research and scholarship that includes (forthcoming) peer-reviewed publications; potential to effectively teach at the undergraduate graduate; and potential to obtain external grant funding. · Applicants at the rank of Associate Professor must have a sustained record of high-quality research and scholarship evidenced by conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications; experience teaching and mentoring students effectively; success in obtaining external grant funding. To be appointed at the rank of associate professor in the program, candidates must meet the department and institutional requirements for tenure. · Applicants at the rank of Professor must have scholarly professional experience demonstrated through an exemplary record of peer-reviewed publications, external funding, and a distinguished record of accomplishments that have led to a national reputation in the applicant’s area of expertise. To be appointed at the rank of full professor in the program, candidates must meet the department and institutional requirements for tenure. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
