NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: For those positions in which incumbents will be working with and handling refrigerants, possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for technicians will be required (as required under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990). Level of Work: Advanced. Supervision Received: General from a higher-level Operating Engineer or agency official. Supervision Exercised: May serve as a lead-worker over subordinate Operating Engineers or provide direct-line supervision over one Operating Engineer. Location of Work: All state agencies. Job Distinctions: Differs from the Operating Engineer 2 by the presence of responsibility for serving as the sole operator on an assigned shift, for serving as lead-worker over Operating Engineers, providing direct-line supervision to one Operating Engineer position, or serving in a large institution with at least 100 buildings or more that has a computer operated centralized energy management system that includes: chillers that handle 11,000 tons or more of chilled water with a total of 4,500 horsepower or more and boilers having 50 tons or more steam capacity and a total of 5,000 horsepower or more. Differs from the Operating Engineer-Cogeneration by the absence of responsibility for regulating, monitoring, servicing, and maintenance of a combined heat and power generation facility. Operates, monitors, and controls system wide output utilizing a computerized energy management system. Keeps operating log sheets. Operates auxiliaries that include firing up steam generators and starting and stopping chillers, pumps, and cooling towers. Read gauges to check water levels, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps. Performs preventive maintenance work on boilers and related equipment such as: ventilation and refrigeration equipment, air conditioning machinery, generators, suction fans, pumps, and compressors.
