OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN

Nature of Work:

Work from drawings, sketches, verbal instructions, and sample or operation sheets, to perform setups, adjustments and operate conventional and automated machine tools to execute diversified close tolerance machining operations, requiring a general knowledge of standard and recognized machining practices, techniques, and diversified shop experience.

Level of Work:

•    Interpret drawings and read operation sheets for operation, material, and dimensional requirements.
•    Make setups and adjustments on machines involving a full complement of tools to diagnose and correct difficulties in machining.
•    Perform operations such as milling, cutoff, slotting, shearing, boring, counter boring, drilling, reaming, tapping, threading, countersinking, chamfering, deburring, and/or protective wrapping as required, and other similar operations.
•    Adjust programs by editing feed rate, cutter compensation, and zero point for purpose of setup including relief cutting, new tooling, and first time zero of program
•    Support the design and manufacture of jigs / fixtures and prove out of CNC programmes
•    Self inspection of repeat work using the appropriate inspection equipment
•    Responsible for the quality and productivity level of the work performed
•    Adherence to Work Order instructions (such as but not limited to routing, quantities)
•    Report all operating difficulties, defects, and other unusual conditions to immediate Supervisor or other authority
•    Support Continuous Improvement activities and processes
•    Ensure conformance to blueprints, written procedures, quality specifications, and AS9100 requirements
•    Move material, tools, fixtures, and equipment as required
•    Dispose of scrap and defective material as instructed to keep actual part counts
•    Maintain a clean and safe work area as part of Health and Safety responsibilities, reporting all discrepancies to Supervisor or other authority
•    Perform regular Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) on machinery
•    Work with others across shifts to ensure smooth, efficient product flow
•    Complete required reports and maintain accurate entries in computer database
•    Assist lower graded employees and perform equal or lower graded duties as required
•    Other duties as required

Minimum required knowledge, skills and abilities

•    Associates degree and 2-5  years of relevant experience in a machine shop environment working on equipment such as but not limited to:-
o    CNC Controlled Horizontal Machine Centers
o    CNC Controlled Vertical Machine Centers
o    CNC Controlled Turning Centers
•    Understand Conversational programming code (Mazatrol, Heidenhain control)
•    Understand ISO code (Fanuc language)
•    Requires knowledge of machining practices and techniques, basic mechanical principles and shop mathematics, setups, tooling applications, operating methods and machinability of materials
•    Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and using micrometers, calipers, scales, indicators, protractors, and other machine shop gauges to setup, operate, and check work
•    An understanding of computers and the ability to enter and retrieve data from PCs as required
•    Editing a program generated from Unigraphics 
•    Making  simple alterations to the programme from an inspection report
•    Ability to lift, push, or pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds

Adheres to and participates in all EHS practices and standards across the site, including but not limited to proactive reporting of observed hazards and recommendations to ensure the safety and wellbeing of self and others.
