Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician

Located in Kenova, West Virginia, Big Sandy is a 300-megawatt simple cycle peaking plant, featuring six water-injected Pratt & Whitney FT-8 Twin Pac gas turbines, providing essential energy generation and grid support in the region. Its efficient turbine technology allows it to respond quickly to peak electricity demand, contributing to a reliable power supply.

Opportunity Summary

The Operations & Maintenance Technician operates, installs, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies, overhauls, diagnoses, tests and maintains all power plant equipment and systems. Provides environmental and safety stewardship. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal and State regulations and plant procedures. Keeps all equipment in optimum operating condition. Develops operating and maintenance procedures for plant equipment to ensure consistent and safe operation. Assists in budget planning and control. Artisan level skills may be in the area of mechanical, instrumentation, controls, and/or electrical maintenance.

Primary Functions

Operates, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains all mechanical, instrumentation, controls and electrical equipment as required to support plant operations and maximize shareholder value. Performs electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks under direction of O&M Management as assigned. Performs station shift operations including startup and shutdown of equipment. Reads and records all gauges, assists in developing standard procedures for operations and maintenance. Maintains shift operating logs and records and performs routine chemical testing. Uses computerized maintenance management system to maintain and control work order system spare parts inventory. Assists in budget planning and control. Trains and develops other employees in performing preventive maintenance and routine equipment service activities. Complies with all site safety requirements and procedures. Practices situational leadership, environmental and safety stewardship. Some travel required (2-3 weeks per year) for training and conferences. All employees have the responsibility to both the customers and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer’s needs are met or exceeded.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the O&M Manager and cooperates with all plant personnel relative to the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position will mostly work a 12-hour rotating Dupont schedule, and will cover shifts as needed. This position may also require extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $42.64 - $59.71 per hour.

Job Qualifications

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Minimum of two years of experience in power plant operations desirable. Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry is also desirable. Hands on experience with all aspects of power plant operations and maintenance including mechanical maintenance, instrument and electrical systems, and a working knowledge of power cycles. Strong aptitude in math, mechanical/electrical ability and production control. Ability to work in a high-performance work system with minimum supervision. Excellent communication and team skills and a working knowledge of Excel and PC based applications. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
