Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician

Opportunity Summary

The O&M Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of power plant operations. They adhere to all company safety and environmental policies, monitor plant parameters, and take immediate corrective action during emergencies to minimize hazards and downtime. Under the supervision of the Control Room Operator, they conduct power plant activities, perform maintenance tasks, and communicate equipment status to ensure smooth operational transitions.

Primary Duties

Adheres to, supports, and complies with all company safety and environmental policies and practices. Ensures all employees, contractors, and visitors conduct themselves safely and within company policies and regulatory guidelines. Understands and follows proper procedures for controlling and shipping all hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams. Under the supervision of the Control Room Operator (CRO), conducts power plant activities including startups, shutdowns, and control of all auxiliary equipment systems and supporting equipment. Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions. Completes and reviews various logs and reports regarding flows, pressures, temperature levels, and other information. Communicates with shift-changing plant personnel to confirm equipment status, load schedules, and changes. Monitors all parameters of the power plant for trends and abnormalities. Under the supervision of the CRO, corrects abnormal conditions when found and reports them to the CRO and/or Plant Manager. Maintains the plant area, shop equipment, tools, and grounds in a clean and safe condition at all times. Takes immediate corrective action in response to emergency situations to minimize safety hazards and reduce damage or downtime to the plant and its equipment. Monitors and performs maintenance work as directed. Typical maintenance tasks include disassembly, repair, and assembly of small and medium-sized equipment; lubricating equipment; assisting with and/or performing instrumentation and electrical troubleshooting and maintenance; changing oil in equipment; and troubleshooting malfunctions. Performs corrective, predictive, and preventive maintenance as directed on electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and/or water systems. Compiles records and reports. Operates various pieces of heavy equipment, such as forklifts, cranes, man lifts, machine tools, and electrical test equipment in the performance of operation and maintenance work. Reads, interprets, and implements technical information such as electrical drawings, manufacturer’s data, and operating and maintenance procedures, along with Plant Standing Orders. Trains to improve personal skills and the skills of co-workers related to the job and/or required for advancement. Documents equipment problems and writes work orders. Works with CROs to track the progress of maintenance and contractors performing work on-site. Provides shift coverage as needed to maintain plant operational readiness. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the Plant Manager and cooperates with all plant personnel. 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

The regular work schedule is based on 12-hour shifts rotating days and nights. Employees work from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM for 7 days, followed by 7 days off. Then, they work from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM for 7 nights, followed by another 7 days off, and this cycle repeats.

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

The starting compensation for this position ranges from $35 to $55 per hour. This broad range accommodates varying levels of experience and expertise among candidates.

Job Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with the completion of applicable technical or vocational training preferred. Some power plant experience in operations and/or maintenance is desired. Knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical equipment, systems construction, capacities, limitations, theories of operation, and operating procedures. Familiarity with plant design and equipment locations, valve configurations, and normal ranges of flows, temperatures, and levels for standard production levels. Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and water treatment systems, along with a basic understanding of water chemistry and electrical test equipment and troubleshooting. Proficiency in mathematical concepts such as algebra and geometry, and the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Capable of interpreting charts, graphs, and gauge scales, troubleshooting equipment and system problems, and interfacing with others. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Capable of dealing with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Safe use of tools, adherence to plant safety rules, and understanding of probable causes of equipment and system malfunctions. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, prints, and engineering data. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, communicate orally and in writing using the English language, use a radio, and speak effectively before groups of people. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license at all times.
