The Operations / Production Manager is responsible for duties related to the supervision of employees and department workflow in the production area for all shifts. The essential duties shall support organizational objectives associated with safety, productivity, quality/ISO and on time delivery. This position will collaborate closely with production leads in relation to safety, production processes, priorities and efficiencies. Additionally, this position is responsible for overseeing the planning and scheduling of production, including assisting with the purchasing of materials. Manages the warehousing of raw and finished goods as well in the production areas. Work closely with all departments to meet the strategic, operational, service, financial, and quality performance goals.
Essential Duties:
Ensure safe practices by identifying safety opportunities and pull for safety improvements with support from the teams. Maintain compliance with all Environmental, Health and Safety policies.
Deliver the required business results; Deliver product on time, with high quality, with minimal scrap, and high labor efficiency. Develop & sustain systems to accomplish these results. Work with the support teams to help set, track, and accomplish goals in each of these areas.
Provide daily direction, coaching and mentoring to direct reports and to contribute to achievement of all organizational objectives (i.e., safety, quality, delivery, productivity and efficiency).
Partner with HR and Plant Manager to ensure; proper departmental staffing levels, interviews, and selects top candidates, conducts necessary training, shares company communications as well as developing coaching needs, employee relations concerns and disciplinary/corrective actions.
Conduct all yearly performance reviews, submit merit requests, and complete annual Individual Development Plans with all direct reports.
Serve as approver for timesheets and requested time off as well as input timesheet corrections as needed in the system for all direct reports.
Partner and follow-up with leads at the daily Tier 1 level meetings. Follow up on ideas generated at the tier 1 meetings and help resolve issues and raised concerns.
Work with the Continuous Improvement team to help facilitate our Lean Daily Management systems at the Tier 1 & 2 level meetings. Work with the CI team lead for the development and sustainment of tier communication methods (Gemba boards for example) and their associated operator’s input.
Drive focuses on the importance of cross department participation, problem solving and task resolution. Report out daily machine level metrics at tier 2 for further team collaboration and resolution.
Maintain collaboration with other departments and leadership at sister sites on projects, initiatives, programs, inventory levels, capacity, customer needs, etc.
Oversee and set expectations of preparation for weekly production planning meetings wherein operations escalate issues and delivery dates. Pull for order status info as needed. Include leads in the production meetings when workload allows.
Oversee accuracy of inventory counts by implementing and managing an inventory control system, capable of identifying discrepancies in inventory counts and taking corrective action to guard against inconsistencies in the future.
Lead efforts for sales inventory & operations planning to ensure adequate supply and on-time delivery including oversight of production scheduling.
Perform analysis of customer demand, sales forecasts, and historical material usage to develop and build to order and build to forecast plans.
Participate, support, and communicate and Lean/5S and overall facility continuous improvement initiatives, ideas or requests daily (i.e., Gemba board meetings, emails, face to face discussions). Request those projects in you find an area in need.
Responsible for requesting the training of new machine operators and/or cross training existing operators with the assistance of other supporting team members as needed.
Work with process engineering and materials manager to support manufacturing processes. Collaborate with the materials department / supply chain functions to ensure the resources on hand meet the needs of the active work orders.
Work closely with quality and engineering when required on special products and projects.
If any specs or quality specifications show inconsistencies, escalate to the engineering, quality, and planning as needed and collaborate on problem resolution.
Support activities within compliance with TL9000 Quality System procedures.
Work with the supervisors and lead operators to ensure the job boards are regularly updated.
Serve as the main point of contact for mechanical equipment issues and escalate to maintenance as needed via email or verbal. Empower the supervisors and lead operators to assist.
Work as a team with peers, managers and employees.
Responsible for any other projects, tasks, etc., as assigned.
Education and Experience Preferred:
High School education or GED is required. BA/BS in Manufacturing or related field is highly preferred.
6 years’ experience with logistics/supply chain preferred
8 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment with responsibilities in machine operating, leading/supervising team members is strongly preferred, but not required.
A combination of equivalent of education and experience is acceptable.
Wire and Cable experience is highly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills Preferred:
Ability to lead and work as a team, ability to make decisions as a team.
Hands-on wire and cable experience strongly preferred.
Ability to read and write and communicate clearly.
Ability to organize works tasks efficiently.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees.
Must be able to perform basic arithmetic, statistics, and other specific mathematical applications.
Must be efficient in the basics of Microsoft applications and ERP applications.
Knowledge of machines and tools, including the designs, uses, repairs, and basic maintenance.
Basic knowledge of principles and processes for providing customers with specific requirements and specifications.
Must be able to multi-task, follow priorities given, and have strong troubleshooting techniques.
Self-starter; ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of business and management principles including resource allocations, basic human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, coordination of people and resources, and simplification techniques.
Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:
Ability to work in a manufacturing environment that can be noisy.
Ability to follow safety guidelines and wear required PPE.
Ability to work long hours while standing and operating/performing basic maintenance on machinery.
Ability to work in high temperatures.
Ability to move objects and materials of at least 50lbs.
