Position Summary: The Operations Supervisor, through direct involvement with the General Manager and Operations Manager, control the daily deliver of the transit service and has the overall responsibility for on time performance, driver and vehicle assignment, according to contract operating standards. The Operations Supervisors regularly rotate between Dispatch, Control Centre and field operations.

 

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities: The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the Operations Supervisor position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Operations Supervisor must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

 

Reviews control centre performance monitors and adjusts services to ensure on-time performanceControls on-time performance of routes and ensures each route is covered daily; reviews driver performance multiple times per day utilizing specific reportsIdentifies and communicates via 2-way radio or other communication device, potential rerouting required as a result of traffic, construction or accident situationsMonitors workforce level and identifies driver shortagesProvides direct daily supervision of the Transit OperatorsCoordinates emergency communications in the event of service disruptionAssigns open work and overtime to Transit Operators and develops the daily operating boardEnsures adherence to the preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles in the fleet as outlined by company and client requirementsEnsures all vehicles are kept reasonably clean, inside and out by regular inspectionsCoordinates with maintenance staff by assisting with vehicle change outs that occur in the field minimizing service disruption and inconvenience to passengersResponds to and investigates all incidents according to Company policy and procedures, in compliance with Provincial regulationsMonitors street operations for on-time performance, schedule and route adherenceAssists operators with service or customer issuesLiaises with relevant personnel regarding booking and scheduling issuesEnsures all safety regulations are being observed and all training methods are adequate and effectiveEnsures that operation is in compliance with both client and company policies and proceduresPrepares, verifies, and reviews staff schedules and work records for payroll purposesMaintains clear and accurate records of individual job performance issuesIdentifies, selects, trains, coaches and manages the performance of Transit OperatorsAssists in the recruitment, selection and training of new operator Conducts site checks and road observations according to client and local policy while documenting findings accordingly and provide necessary reports to Operations or Safety Manager as directedConducts gate checks at pull-out or pull-in times ensuring on-time service and proper completion of necessary paperwork including manifests and pre- and post-trip inspectionsEnsures that all Transit Operators are fit for duty, meet uniform and equipment standards and are in possession of proper licensing and certificationsCommunicates clearly each staff member’s roles and responsibilities and provides support to help staff accomplish assigned objectivesManages Transit Operator attendance and absenteeismPrepares required operating reports for client and management staffDetermines whether to discipline and applies discipline, including suspensions and terminations, according to company policy and in compliance with collective agreementsParticipates in and advises management regarding labour relations strategies and relationshipsRepresents Company in grievance procedureRespects and maintains the confidentiality of all employee records, business records, client and customer information, data and other information not otherwise available to the publicMaintains a safe work area and a focus on safety to reduce the opportunity for injury to self or other employeesDemonstrates regular and consistent attendance and punctuality in compliance with the company attendance policyWorks flexible hours and on weekends as requiredAll other duties as assigned

Working Conditions: The Operations Supervisor works in both an office environment and field environment and may be called upon after hours from time-to-time by office employees or managers, in an emergency, or other reasons as required. The job requires the following physical activities: sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, loading and unloading, typing, filing, answering phones. Operations Supervisors frequently work in outside weather conditions and are occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibrations.

Qualifications:Minimum of three (3) years’ supervisory experience in the transportation industry. Supervisory experience of a unionized work group in a different industry may be considered at the Company’s discretionExperience supervising/managing in a unionized environment High School Diploma or equivalentA valid B or C Ontario Driver’s License with Z (Airbrakes) endorsementMinimum of 3 Years of driving experience and an acceptable driving recordBe able to pass and maintain a clear Criminal Background Check

Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop and motivate staffAbility to effectively delegate tasks, provide appropriate supervision and follow up to department staffExcellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to influence people at all levels of the organizationAnalytical with a strong attention to detailHighly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while exceeding established goals and objectivesAbility to provide excellent customer service and present a professional demeanor Knowledge of the transit service area and system parameters, client and service operating requirements Working knowledge of Trapeze or similar transit scheduling software and the skills to resolve situational challengesProficient in Microsoft Office software including spreadsheet, word-processing applications, etc.Able to use multi-line phone system and handle multiple tasks concurrently, accurately and effectivelyAbility to work a variety of different shift and flexible hours including days, evenings, over nights and weekendsAbility to work independently and objectively, plan ahead and schedule workAbility to remain polite, professional and courteous while communicating with customers and other staffAbility to remain calm and manage emergency situations and ensure the safety of all customers and employeesAbility to hold the respect and confidence of all employeesStrong written and verbal communication skillsDemonstrated ability to manage with a “Safety First” attitude
