POSITION SUMMARY:  

The Marathon Petroleum Garyville Refinery is seeking highly motivated Operator Technicians to join our team. Operator Technicians work together to monitor, regulate, troubleshoot and safely operate complex process equipment. 

Operator Technicians are responsible for monitoring units under their control while keeping product specs and yields at a maximum. With knowledge of the process units, must be able to assist other unit operator technicians in their training and day to day operation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overseeing the day-to-day operations of either tank farms within the refinery or various operating units within the refinery. 

Managing and monitoring the outside equipment and control functions involved in the refinery processes. 

Gathering data from these functions and analyzing and interpreting it into appropriate action as operational adjustments or recommendations. 

Providing assistance with unit startups, shutdowns and emergency response. 

Possessing an in-depth knowledge of the physical portion of the plant. 

Operators work in a safety-sensitive environment which includes working inside and outside, in differing climatic conditions, and around noises, heat, heights, and equipment associated with working in and around an oil refinery. Operations personnel are responsible for controlling a safe and efficient refining process and performing related routine maintenance. To ensure safe operations, new hires must successfully complete a rigorous pre-employment assessment process, drug/alcohol and medical screenings, and a background check as well as operator qualification training post-hire.  

Minimum Qualifications (required):

High School graduate or GED equivalent, required. Some college or technical coursework is preferred.  

At least 18 years of age.  

Excellent math, computer, communication, and analytical skills are required.  

Willing to work 12-hour rotating shift schedule including weekends, holidays and overtime, required. 

Physical Requirements:

Employees must have the ability to climb over 75 feet, work in confined spaces, wear proper safety equipment, including a self-contained breathing apparatus as necessary, use hand tools, and work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. 

Employees must have the ability to perform work at ground level and at heights on concrete, metal grating, gravel, asphalt and piping surfaces, while climbing, lifting 40 pounds plus, carrying 10-20 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 250 pounds with mechanical assistance. 

Employees are subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

Process Tech, Technical/Chemical or Power Plant Technology Associates degree  

Two (2) years’ experience as a process operator in the petrochemical or related industry 

Good mechanical aptitude, oral and written communication skills and sound decision-making ability. 

Ability to perform well in a team environment working with little supervision to prioritize daily work schedules depending on operational requirements 

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. 

Pay and Benefits

Starting hourly pay for this position is between $39.48 - $45.27 and is based on relevant prior work experience and qualifications. Additional increases are based on demonstrated qualification/proficiency after being hired. Annual increases are scheduled.

The position includes a competitive wage, comprehensive benefits package including a company matched 401k, pension, and medical benefits. About Marathon's Garyville Refinery:

Our Garyville refinery is located along the Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It has a crude oil refining capacity of 578,000 barrels per calendar day (bpcd). The Garyville refinery is configured to process a wide variety of crude oils into gasoline, distillates, fuel-grade coke, asphalt, polymer-grade propylene, propane, refinery-grade propylene, dry gas, slurry and sulfur. Products at the refinery are transported by pipeline, barge, transport truck, rail and ocean tanker. The refinery has access to the export market and multiple options to sell refined products. A major expansion project was completed in 2009 that increased Garyville’s crude oil refining capacity, making it one of the largest refineries in the U.S.
