Ophthalmic Technician

Summary:
. The Ophthalmic Technician reports to the LPG Ophthalmology Practice Manager or designee.  Assists the ophthalmologist in patient care by taking histories performing various procedures and tests and preparing patients to see the doctor.  Assists in the processing of patients by performing office administrative and daily operative support duties for optimal workflow.

 

Responsibilities:
Coordinates patient appointments follow-up phone calls and responds to general questions.
Registers patients collects co-payments and processes appointment discharge according to established procedures.
Ensures eligibility authorization and referral for services.
Confirms demographics takes chief complaints reviews with patient- medical family and past surgical history allergies and current medications.
Performs Visual acuity (distance and near) color vision stereoscopic Auto-Refraction Manifest Refraction Height and Weight Intraocular Pressure Automated Perimetry.Performs additional duties required for the delivery of ophthalmic care and treatment of patients which may include instilling eye drops and ointments per standing physician orders.
Maintains a smooth flow of patients to the physician altering test sequence as required.  
Manages the EPIC(Lifechart) Clinical In-basket messages daily; provides telephone support regarding ocular emergencies prescription refills and patient care questions.  
Orders all medical and office supplies as needed after successful completion of People Soft training/requirements.
Maintains inventory of medical and office supplies; tracks and reconciles all orders with requisitions. Corresponds with purchasing department and vendors as needed for follow up on orders. 
Sets up and cleans examination and procedure rooms following infection control standards.
Ensures equipment is working properly for patient safety and notifies the appropriate personnel when a problem is identified.
Provides training and assistance for all new ophthalmic assistants on all principal duties and responsibilities.
Follows all policies and procedures.  Respects confidentiality.  Completes annual training.
Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Other information:
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or equivalent.  
Certification on Accreditation of Ophthalmic Medical Programs or graduate from Medical Assistant program preferred.  
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant designation required. Maintains certification through CE requirements.
EXPERIENCE:
Must have a minimum of one year of Ophthalmic Assistant experience.  Demonstrates knowledge of ocular pharmacology including the identification and proper use of diagnostic medications.  
High level of customer service cultural sensitivity and effective oral and written communications skills.

None.
