Ophthalmic Technician - Brooklyn & Manhattan Float

Summary of Position

• Assist the physician with daily patient care, communication, and workflow. Specific tasks include but are not limited to taking
patient histories, administering tests, scribing, and performing a variety of clinical and patient services.

Principal Accountabilities

• Obtain patient history and charts procedures in the electronic medical records.
• Perform and record visual acuities, color vision, stereopsis test, auto refractometer readings, blood pressure as
directed by ophthalmologist.
• Order new/replacement lenses based on prescription.
• Handle patient questions during visits and via phone, providing advice and resolving problems in consultation with
ophthalmologist.
• Maintain, calibrate, clean, and sterilize ophthalmic instruments and equipment as indicated.
• Assist physicians in performing in-office ophthalmic procedures.
• Transcribe physician's dictation into patient electronic medical record, as directed by the physician, according to local,
state and federal guidelines.
• Monitor inventory of supplies and restocks as necessary.
• Ensure medication and treatment items are not expired.
• Educate patients on ocular conditions and ocular care.
• Perform other job-related duties as required.

Education, Training, Licenses, Certifications

• High School Diploma or GED. (R)
• Formal ophthalmic training. Preferred
• Some college coursework, preferably including basic anatomy and medical terminology courses Preferred
• Current Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification as COA, COT, or CMOT.
(Required within 12 months of hire) Preferred

Relevant Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• One to two years’ experience in an eye care environment. (R)
• Prior experience with ophthalmic testing and scribing. (R)
• Excellent interpersonal skills, customer service, organization ability, time management and the ability to effectively prioritize
work. (R)
• Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks with strong attention to detail and documentation. (R)
• Proficiency with computer use, especially an electronic medical record. (R)
• Knowledge of medical terminology, particularly related to ophthalmology. (R)
• Prior experience in a fast-paced, high customer volume work environment. (P)
