Job Summary

Utilize the nursing process, at a Specialty Resource III level, critical to the surgical services departments in terms of safe and efficient patient care, physician relations, employee satisfaction and surgical volumes. Specific expectations in the following areas: physician interaction, sales rep interaction, central service interaction, employee interaction and management interaction are required.

 

Responsibilities

• Perform the duties and responsibilities of a Clinical Nurse III: Patient Care • • • Utilize assessment skills to identify common needs of patient groups on individual units. • • • Formulate nursing diagnosis that have long range implications for individuals and groups on individual units. • • • Recognize subtle changes in patient condition and implement revised plan of care for groups of patients on individual units. • • • Formulate expected outcomes of care that are individualized and have long range effects on patient care. • • • Act as a resource to assist others on units to develop organizational and prioritizing skills. • • • Evaluate care based on patient progress, standards of care and Quality Improvement process at the unit level. • • • Act as a role model for effective communication at the unit level. • • • Act as a resource to assist others on units to protect patient rights. • • • Act as a resource to assist others on units to provide privacy and maintain confidentiality. Knowledge and Skills • • • Assess educational needs of unit staff. Assist other staff members in identifying personal learning needs. • • • Proficient in advanced skills and able to assist others to perform advanced skills. • • • Proactive in development of unit resources and identify additional outside resources. • • • Act as a resource to assist others to handle inappropriate practice. Proactive in dealing with unit specific and/or common ethical issues. • • • Maintain unit and institution required education. Document attendance appropriately. Serve as a role model regarding continuous education. Professional Relationships/Leadership • • • Perform as a group leader and evaluate group process at unit level. • • • Assist others in developing group process skills. • • • Act as role model which facilitates positive behavior in dynamic group setting. • • • Utilize anticipatory problem solving through effective communication, assertiveness and conflict resolution. • • • Monitor nursing practices that impact unit finances and implements appropriate control measures. Quality Improvement/Research • • • Assist with/responsible for QI calendar for unit specific patient population. • • • Independently change own practice. According to QI/research findings at unit level. • • • Facilitate change in unit nursing practice R/T current research literature. • Perform staffing functions as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Adjust the schedule according to census and acuity. • Assess the unit workload (including Medicus acuity), staff qualifications and other appropriate factors. Make assignments accordingly. Reassess throughout shifts and adjust accordingly. Authorize overtime. • Assess quality/quantity of work in an ongoing manner. Assure policy and procedure compliance. Give feedback and assistance as needed. • Orient and educate both new and current employees. Review documentation of education. Followup as needed. Encourage/Coach employees regarding opportunities for continuing education. • Demonstrate positive and professional customer service and co-worker relations. • Assist Nurse Manager in managing within budget or other guidelines. • Perform related duties as assigned. • Specialty Resource duties: Research equipment and supplies upon request by Physician. Field Surgeon issues/complaints and develop action plans. Assist Surgeons with new equipment during procedures. Liaison between Physicians and Hospital management. Coordinate scheduling of procedures based upon equipment needs. First line of education from Reps on new products. Coordinate equipment and supply trials. Update preference cards to maintain accuracy. Work closely with Central Service when new instrumentation is obtained in order to keep it in optimal condition. (proper cleaning methods, proper storage methods, etc) Precept new employees in their specialties. Help educate staff on new equipment. Assist with daily staff assignments. Field calls from home within scope of their specialty. Provide input on performance reviews.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Demonstrate positive customer service and co-worker relations. 3. Comply with the company's attendance policy. 4. Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to, overtime, various shift work, and on-call situations. 7. Perform work in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan of the organization. 8. Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures, as applicable. 9. Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Education 

• Associate's Degree (Required) Experience: 1 Year of RN experience Substitution: May substitute Formal Nursing Program for the Associate Degree
• Bachelor's Degree
