The primary purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of munitions functions to include Ordnance systems and equipment storage and maintenance, ordnance transport, MUNS Control and other duties as assigned. Responsibilities Performs munitions troubleshooting to determine and identify serviceability, potential hazards und possible deterioration Receives, stores, handles, and transports munitions of explosive and/or toxic munitions requiring unusual degrees of protection in shipment and storage Maintains testing, movement, and accountable for documentation utilized during munitions operations Transports munitions. Operates one or more types of medium trucks, such as pickup, panel, or flatbed trucks, which typically have a gross vehicle weight of 4,000 pounds or less, on public roads at highway speeds Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-6641-10 ORDNANCE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC position. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to perform the work of an ORDNANCE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of a variety of major items and assemblies of ordnance systems such as missiles, erecting, and launching devices containing a number of interrelated devices such as target detecting, arming, steering, power, control, and propulsion assemblies to troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, rebuild, modify, install, and test systems; and knowledge to identify and correctly choose between alternative methods and trade techniques, set up the work area, and determine the degree of disassembly necessary and extent of rework needed Knowledge of explosive safety regulations, practices, and procedures Skill in the use of precision measurement instruments common to the trade such as height gages, micrometers, dial indicators, optical comparators, and surface gages to assure dimensional accuracy of such critical parts as gears, shafts, bearing spacers, hydraulic valve sleeves and pistons, and a variety of mating and directional control surfaces Ability to read and interpret technical orders, manufacturers' manuals, maintenance bulletins, blueprints, schematic drawings, and other technical information, and use complex shop mathematics and handbook formulas to complete work Ability to troubleshoot complete ordnance systems such as missiles and erecting and launching devices, make necessary repairs and modifications, and perform operational and functional tests PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, climbing, stretching, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Some work is occasionally performed in a sitting position while making repairs at a workbench or operating test stands and consoles. The work requires lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying various sizes and shapes of components and parts weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally handles similar items weighing up to 100 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is normally performed either inside shop areas, with occasional outside work in areas that are sometimes noisy and drafty; however work areas are generally well heated and ventilated. There is frequent exposure to cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and injury from possible ruptured lines or component failure during high pressure testing. Must occasionally wear face masks and protective clothing when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic fuels and acids, and may be required to work in close proximity to explosive components and devices. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
