Organizer in Training-Strategic Campaigns
SEIU Local 1000 is a progressive public sector labor union representing over 96,000 California
state employees in ten different bargaining units. We negotiate and enforce a complex contract
that ensures good working conditions, fair wages and secure health care and retirement benefits.
We are seeking an Organizer in Training for our Strategic Campaigns Department in Oakland,
CA. This is an entry level position to the Organizer classification.
The OIT will complete a formal and informal training program, including extensive on-the-job
training, designed to develop the skills necessary to advance into the journey level Union
Representative/Organizer classification. If you’re passionate about organizing, a tireless advocate

DUTIES: The required duties, which may or may not be continuously performed, include, but
are not limited to, the following:
Identify, recruit, train and develop worksite leaders and stewards.
Lead, motivate and mobilize worksite leaders, stewards and members in internal and
external organizing, politics, community alliance building and other union activities.
Develop and maintain effective communication networks in worksites, including writing
and distributing leaflets, notices, newsletters, emails and other materials among worksite
leaders, stewards and members.
Visit members and potential members at their homes.
Create and maintain lists and charts, which may include input on, and operation of,
computerized database systems.
Work with worksite stewards and leaders to represent members through the grievance and
arbitration system, as well as mobilizing members to take action around issues in the
worksite.
Effectively advance the Union’s positions in community groups, political groups, and
labor councils and with local, state and federal officials and legislative bodies.
Conduct research and analyze data.
Prepare and present clear, concise and complete verbal and written reports.
Perform other related duties as required.
ELIGIBILITY:
Experience as a union steward or officer, or as an organizer in a field other than labor
(community, social justice, environmental, etc.), or proven ability to carry on the
responsibilities of the job.
Leadership and motivational skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to listen actively and
frame issues.
Analytical skills directed towards strategic planning, and the ability to deal with
conflicting/ changing priorities.
Ability to establish and maintain rapport with widely varied ethnic, occupational and
social groups.
Basic computer skills, such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and email programs.
Ability to work within timelines under pressure and general supervision.
Willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities.
Willingness to travel and work in different locations for determined periods of time.
Valid driver’s license, working automobile and valid auto insurance with minimum level
of coverage required by staff union contract.
Commitment to social justice and building power for workers.

The salary range for this position is $61,644 to $76,116 annually. SEIU Local 1000 employees
