Working in partnership with our service partners, Guys and St. Thomas Hospitals, Kings College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital we aim to set the standard for the future of pathology.Job overview We are seeking a proactive, motivated and experienced Biomedical Scientist to work in the Haematology and Haemostasis section of the Blood Science Laboratory. Working a 24/7 shift rota is an integral part of this post. We currently employ 10 out of hours BMS staff covering the rota with addition of MLA support on all shifts. Based in London, the post holder will operate in the busy Synnovis Laboratories at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust which supports the varied services provided at Kings which include a large clinical Haem/oncology department. Foetal Medicine Unit, Liver Transplant Unit, a large Obstetric department, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and a designated Major Trauma Centre. The Blood Science Laboratory is fully automated equipped with 5 Sysmex XN series FBC analysers, SP50, TS10Up and ESR Interrliner connected on a Sysmex XN-9100 Haematology track processing approximately 3500 samples a day. The analysers operate through the Sysmex EPU and Roche cITM middleware systems that are connected to the WinPath LIMs system.

Main duties of the job An exciting opportunity has arisen for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with significant recent experience and have a proven track record of effective performance at BMS Band 6 level. Applicants will be expected to work towards a Specialist Portfolio and to assist in the day to day running of the Haematology and Haemostasis Laboratory. You should have proven experience in general Haematology and haemostasis together with an understanding of all relevant legislation, GMP and UK guidelines. The Haematology laboratory is state of the art, superbly equipped and handles the workload of Kings College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The department also provides professional and scientific services for Southwark and Lambeth primary care groups as well as the Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham GPs. Working as part of a team, this is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience in a highly automated clinical Haematology Department. The Haematology laboratory supports the varied services provided at Kings which include a large clinical Haem/oncology department. Foetal Medicine Unit, Liver Transplant Unit, a large Obstetric department, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and a designated Major Trauma Centre. As Haematology is part of a larger Blood Sciences Laboratory and we are regularly inspected by UKAS for accreditation and IBMS approved for pre-registration and specialist training in Haematology with Hospital Transfusion Practice.

You will be responsible for ensuring operational functionality of the Haematology & Haemostasis work areas in The Blood Sciences Laboratory including instrument maintenance, management of workload. Authorisation and release of results and timely communication of and dealing with critical results.The post holder will work in conjunction with the seniors and Operations Manager to maintain at all times the required high quality standards and ensure that all work is completed on time. To keep an up to date knowledge of Haematology and Haemostasis current working practices including technical problem solving of analytical equipment and have a demonstrable experience for blood film morphology, together with an understanding of all relevant legislation, GMP and UK guidelines. The successful candidate would be an individual with high professional standards, who can actively contribute in the continuing maintenance of our UKAS accreditation by demonstrating a good working knowledge of the accreditation process and by providing an exceptional quality service to all our users. An up to date knowledge of Haematology and Haemostasis technique methods and guidelines, including technical problems solving of analytical equipment and good understanding of laboratory LIMS systems is a must have. We are looking for someone who is HCPC registered with significant recent experience and have a proven track record of effective performance at BMS Band 6 level.
