Outpatient Clerk/Technician
Job Description
Collects biological specimens by various appropriate methods such as venipuncture and micro collection for all patient populations and techniques following all department and safety policies/procedures. Observes patient for adverse effects and reports immediately to supervisor.Prepares samples for testing. Verifies patient demographics, test information, sample identification and specimen type. Clarifies any discrepancies. Performs limited laboratory procedures per established protocols. Maintains instrument function checks. Receives incoming calls to the department; assists caller or directs caller to the appropriate personnel. Handles phone calls to and from physician's offices and departments regarding patient information.Receives and/or collects a variety of biological specimens, including verification of demographics and test information, identification of samples requested and specimen type.Identifies and accesses specimens using appropriate computer hardware and software, transports specimens with requisitions to appropriate areas.Maintains accurate records regarding the collection and collation of data including number of patients seen and productivity reports.Communicates problems, unusual test request/questions promptly and directly to the director or coordinator.Participates in quality improvement activities. Develops collaborative working relationship with staff, physician office personnel, and other departmental personnel.Attends in-services and completes mandatory continuing education and training in order to maintain organization and department specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure.Follows system and department policies and procedures.Other duties as assignedEducation:
High school graduate or the equivalent including courses in typing CRT data entry business mathematics and office procedures.Graduate of medical assisting program or in lieu, two years medical/technical assisting experience.Certifications:
Obtains Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire and maintains current.Complexity of Work:
Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.Ability to perform work requiring a moderate degree of repetitious manual operations with normal care and accuracy.Knowledge of basic office equipment and procedures. Proficient in the use of PC software applications. Strong typing and data entry skills with attention to accuracy. Ability to communicate information verbally and in writing to physician and other staff.Strong interpersonal communications skills requiredAbility to perform multiple tasks simultaneously in stressful situations.Work Experience:
One year experience with specimen collection and laboratory techniques and procedures preferred.Demonstrated strong communication skills as well as the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.Computer experience.Physical Requirements:
Visual acuity and manual dexterity sufficient to operate equipment requiring fine adjustmentPersonal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required
